Their poorest for me and definitely a huge disappointment. Or certainly at the time. A couple of albums since and a few covers albums have probably shoved it a little further down the bollox list. But it was Back To Back that completely lowered my expectations, so further disappointments were minimised. Cushioned, shall we say Of the 11 albums listed by comparison, I prefer 9 of them. By quite a bit. The End Of The Road tour meant it was hastily forgotten. Because not a single song from it was in the set. Despite it spawning (and I use that word in the satanic sense) 4 hit singles.

Some decent songs in there (among some awful sh*te) TCTTG is the ‘stand out’ for me, and the 2 ‘Blues’ tunes are great too. Still tho’, I’d prefer QPQ if I had to choose! 👍

BTB v the albums that came later is a really interesting topic!
I certainly prefer HT
On the other hand, was there a better single after Ole rag blues? And BTW, I've grown a bit tired of it
Did a better recorded cover follow mess of blues?
Did a better ballad follow tcttg?
Did any later album have better vocals?
For years I was convinced rtyd was "best album since NTL". But I don't go back to it, except like a zombie and one man band. These days I prefer 1982
UTI is a good balanced album but what's on there I really love? 2 songs
QPQ has better material but feels like a long list of songs, not a balanced album. There's half a dozen really good tracks. From start to finish is it a more enjoyable listen?
Backbone is a better balanced album than most since BTB. Still too soon to say whether I prefer it to BTB

Interested topic, indeed.
No Better cover that Mess of a Blues would follow, Not better Ballad than tcttg and definetively not better Vocals in the following albums ( even if AL and RP only sang in 1 song If I am not wrong )
As I started to buy Quo albums in 1983, I guess I was not as much dissapointed as older Quo Fans that found 1982 and B2B really a poor effort.
Still I rank B2B higher that the rest of coming Albums except HT.

I have considered once again about B2B and have observed from a great height that ...
Marguerita Time is my favourite track on it.
There are one or two good bits in other tracks, partic. Win or Lose. And the vocals are quite good. But there's just nothing on it that sounds like what I loved in the Quo sound. 1982 still had it, Back to Back doesn't. In the Army Now was a better album with some pretty songs on it, but only flashes of Quo sound.

Having a Google around the place, i find out that Alan's "Your Kind Of Love" was co-written with a chap called Dave Skinner - never seen the song co-credited to him before. A session/touring guy who, obviously, also writes songs, he seems to have had a lot of involvement with Aussie musicians including Swanee of Party Boys fame, so maybe that was how Alan got involved with them after Quo? Dave apparently still lives down under and has a studio in the Blue Mountains, close to Sydney.
He co-wrote this number with Alan for The Party Boys - sounds like "it could've been" from the pen of the same guy who co-wrote YKOL for Quo, i.e. kinda cheesey...

I'm impressed with all the initials of the subsequent albums Railroad. I only know HT, ISOTFC, QPQ and B. So I gave it a spin and sadly, I don't agree. I felt what I felt back then but only more strongly now. The band were going through the motions and pulling in different directions. Agree that Old Rag Blues is a good track. When Can't Be Done started I was reminded of the Two Ronnie's Quo piss-take. But it got better but still a bit Quo by numbers for me. My favourite is Too Close to the Ground. And I'm convinced that if this track had been recorded by a well known ballad singer in the pop charts, it would still be a hit today. And Francis does a lovely job singing it too. Then I thought, so why is Francis singing it when it's written by Rick plus Andy B of course? I stopped wondering when No Contract kicked with Rick giving us his 'rock' voice. And the penny dropped for me; why Francis keeps saying Rick had a good voice for ballads. I'm sure he would have sung this really well too. As he does with Living on an Island. I kind of skipped through the rest of the album. And I could hear Alan doing his rock stuff. The lighter tracks leave me cringing a little. And I only lasted a few of the opening bars of GDTTN. Of the later 4 albums that I properly listened to, my favourite, surprisingly is ISOTFC. No skippers for me, even with some odd tracks like Saddling Up. I think that's cos Francis is writing again with Bob Young and prefer their lighter songs than the Rossi/Frost combo. A masterpiece? No. But I played it far more than HT which I only listened up to track 6 (Solid Gold). And I rarely gave the other 2 a spin - QPQ and B. In fact, I put that on now instead.

....the Quo sound. 1982 still had it, Back to Back doesn't. A good observation that and maybe sums up why I think 1+9+8+2 is OK and Back To Back plumbs the depths. It seems to be a favourite but I have never been able to take to Ol' Rag Blues in the way that others have. As a single, it was a bit of a disappointment at the time. Although the blue vinyl was nice And their rendition of A Mess of Blues was pretty poor. Very much improved upon on Aquostic II. I knew things were bad when I saw the calendar that came out for the following year. If anyone remembers it or still has a copy, you'll know what I mean. All "Jackie" and no "Kerrang". Whoever was managing at the time got that wildly wrong. But perceptions of any Quo album differ depending on when, and perhaps at what age, you first heard it. I was about 12 years into my adoration and almost everything that came before was at worst good and at best a masterpiece. This was a serious let down.
