Argh! What the hell is it with bands seemingly rerecording their old material over doing something new? Lightning doesn't strike twice. Nostalgia is insecurity made flesh. Going over paths they trod because going off the path is more unpredictable. A steady pair of hands around the throat. Status Coast!

It's Not bad but something's missing on yeah good ol' Rick there's no power in the song what so ever where's the Rock feel. Well we all have to get use to it & we still got original 1973 version of Caroline

Royalties? This version can be used for adverts, or in other media, with less or nothing going to the estates of Rick and Alan, and whatever Spud gets, if anything, from legacy recordings. Just guessing. Sadly, that makes sense. Royalties from the recording would now go to current band members instead. Thanks for all your comments, I'll pass on listening to this one. I am guessing this has been released to promote the new album "Quoin' in the Noughties", I notice three re-recordings by the current band are on that, this, PP and RAOTW

Well I actually think from a recording perspective this knocks spots of the tepid riffs version
However Richie’s guitar for the intro is terrible. No balls at all.
Boost the bass though and I think overall this sounds as good as 5 old men playing in isolation in a dry, ambience free studio can.
The drums and snare in particular are a huge step up from Backbone.
Really you could make this much better with a teeny bit of reverb and a ballsier intro

I think these re-recordings (in case of RAOTW re-re-re-re-recording) are a way to have classic tracks on this new compilation, because the originals recordings are from Universal and maybe they ask for too much money for those instead of re-re-recording those again. Also, a royalties thing.
I've seen compilations from The Ramones from Chrysalis that have Blizkrieg Bop on a live version, just to have that song in that compilation and that's a version that they have in the archives and can use without asking the other record company (the original is from Sire/Warner), for example.
But, it's just a guess, maybe it would be better if they choose live versions, don't know (in that case, doesn't have sense because of the 3rd CD of live recordings). I hate this version, but this is not an album that I'd like to purchase anyway. Even the name of the compilation is stupid. Noughties? Having tracks from the 90s and 10s? Maybe is a matter of not being English my mother tongue, but can't see the reason of that name.

This is a very good version for the current line up. It is faithful to the original, with some of the recent live "extras". The vocal from Francis is excellent, and much closer to original than the Riffs recording. I like it a lot.
One thing...Francis said in a recent interview they can't justify expense of recording new material... paying for studio time/engineers etc, due to very little income from streaming platforms and low CD sales. So it seems strange to spend money on this.
Enjoyed listening all the same.

Although I don't really have an issue with how the originals sound, except that the snare is too low in the mix. Also curious that Liberty Lane was not remixed.

Hmm, don't really see the point, although they have tried to recreate the original more faithfully than the live version with only slight hints of piano here and there. The bass seems quite far down in the mix though. But, for me, the original is legend and I'll always go back to that. This is not only an odd recording but also seems an odd release for those 'streaming platforms'. If you're going to go to the trouble of doing something like this, why not just record something new? Royalties? This version can be used for adverts, or in other media, with less or nothing going to the estates of Rick and Alan, and whatever Spud gets, if anything, from legacy recordings. Just guessing. I thought that too the royalties factor as no doubt they will flog this version to TV & Radio companies to use as background music in their products and nothing royalties wise going to the classic line up estates. It does sound crap though no punch in the intro & Francis going thru the motion of singing it for millionth time.
