Jack Bruce was born on this day, 14th May, in 1943. Well known as the bassist and co-singer in the 60s super-group Cream, he latterly played in several other bands and also recorded solo. He died in 2014. He wrote this song in 1967, just 24 years old! What a great band. One of the best.

American power pop/rock singer/guitarist Dwight Twilley, born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on the 6th June 1951, is 71 today. Here is his first single released in 1975. I'm intrigued with his bassist's unorthodox way of playing! Never seen fretwork like that before! Always liked that one.

It's Jon Lord's birthday today! Born on 9th June 1941, he sadly passed away in 2012 aged 71. Here he is on 'Lazy' from Purple's 1972 album 'Machine Head'. What an integral part of the Deep Purple sound he was!! (This clip is from 1999, so not sure which version of Purple this is, IV, V, VI )

Happy 62nd birthday to “Holding back the years” singer Mick Hucknall As a little side note to the stunning Mr Hucknell, Mrs Mortified told me a tale about the attractive little scamp once. She used to work as part of the cabin crew with BA out of Manchester and one fine day the little Red one got on the shuttle to London. The rest is a tale of diva behaviour, constant attention seeking and generally unpleasant conduct. She said he was rude, demanding but, worst of all, when he got off there was a nasty, greasy stain on the headrest. That seemed to throw her the most. Let's just say she's not a fan (P.S. She says quite a few celebs got on flights and most were extremely pleasant and courteous. She only recalls another two that were unpleasant. But I couldn't possibly name them. Wouldn't be fair to Caroline Aherne and Lisa Stansfield )

Chester Arthur Burnett, otherwise known as Howlin' Wolf was born on 10th June 1910 in Mississippi. He moved to Chicago when young and became one of the most well-regarded of the Chicago blues musicians alongside Muddy Waters. Here he is in 1964 with one of his most popular singles (released in 1956). What a presence on stage! What a voice!

Frank Beard, ZZ Top's drummer since July 1969, was born on 11th June 1949 and so is 73 today. You'll recognise him as the one without the beard in this clip!!!

Reg Presley, lead singer with The Troggs, was born on this day, 12th June 1941. He died in 2013. They had a number of big hits in the mid 60s, including this one, which got to No. 2 in 1966.

Denis Locorriere, lead singer and guitarist with US band Dr. Hook, was born on 13th June 1949 and is 73 today. Here he is in black with the guitar, alongside the other lead singer in the band, Ray Sawyer (eyepatch).

Today, the 14th June, is Rod Argent and Boy George's 77th and 61st birthday respectively. The 14th June is also the 73rd birthday of James Whild Lea, better known as Jim Lea; bassist, organist and violinist for Slade. I started hearing Slade on the radio c1972 and for the next few years there was nothing but Slade on the radio. They had one No 1 in '71, two in '72 and three in '73 and for those three years they were unstoppable chart-wise. I would imagine that most Quo fans would also be partial to some Slade in their music collection; they played that kind of good-time, high energy, guitar-driven rock n roll that we all love. This was mainly down to Jim, who, as well as Chas Chandler, was the musical director in Slade, while Noddy was normally the lyricist. And as the 70s turned into the 80s, Jim became the person who took over the production of much of their musical output. Choosing a song to note Jim's birthday is like choosing one of your children over another - impossible... but I'll pick this one, the last charting Slade single, in 1991, and what was originally a Jim Lea solo effort, which he turned over to the band for one final push at sustaining their musical legacy.

...and just as Charlie Watts's birthday followed Ronnie Woods in the Stones, so Neville 'Noddy' Holder's birthday is the day after Jim Lea's. Noddy turns 76 today, born on the 16th June 1946. Noddy was THE unmistakeable voice of Slade for over 20 years and he wrote some great tunes to boot alongside Jim Lea. They say that the royalties on 'Merry Xmas Everybody' alone keeps his pension plan topped up nicely every year! I picked Slade's last charting single for Jim, so here is their first single to enter the charts, 'Get Down & Get with It' in 1971.

Garry Roberts, founding member of and lead guitarist with the Boomtown Rats, was born on 16th June 1954, making him 68 today. Here he is (if you can spot him, what with Geldof hogging the camera!) next to Bob, in the cream jacket and shades, on this hit from 1977.

B-Side to the Lookin' After No.1 12" single, which I bought a very long time ago Always preferred this slightly to the A-side. Pretty much went off the Rats from that point on. They never released anything else that I liked

Born Peter Robinson on 17th June 1944, the artist known as Chris Spedding is 78 years old today. A long-time friend of Chrissie Hynde, he released several solo albums, was producer of the Sex Pistols early demos and worked with artists as diverse as Joan Armatrading, John Waits, Roger Daltry & Jeff Wayne. But most casual music listeners will only remember him as a one-hit wonder with this song from 1975:

On 18th June 1942, Paul McCartney was born in Liverpool. He is 80 today. Not much to add to his incredible story, except I've never seen him live, another disappointment in my musical journey. I'm just throwing a random clip of one of his songs on here. There are hundreds to choose from. What a legacy the man has!
Edit: He has some beast of a drummer!!
