Bit of a lean day as far as rock birthdays are concerned but, nevertheless, Leo Sayer, was born on 21st May 1948, and is 74 today. This is his first hit, reaching no. 2 in early 1974.

Here he is in his early pomp with the Smiths on Top of the Pops. that song always reminds me of a spoof article in an Everton fanzine from many moons ago, maybe When Skies Are Grey, about an Everton "crew" known as The Everton Charming Men. It was quite an amusing piece, but imagine my surprise when I came across a reference to the aforementioned hooligans upon following some link that took me to a website chronicling such mobs for the major european clubs, as if it was a genuine outfit! |

The big birthday today is that of Bob Dylan who reaches the grand old age of 80+1. He has a huge presence in modern music and a huge discography to boot... and I'm sure most of us here can hum at least a couple of his better known tracks. But today, I'm going to call out the birthday of Rich Robinson, guitarist and co-founder - with his old brother Chris - of The Black Crowes. He was born on 24th May 1969 and is 53 years old. I bought their album 'By Your Side' in 1999 purely on the strength of a 10 minute headphone listen in a record shop. Still love it to this day. Here is the title track with most of the guitar work on it by Rich.

The Black Crowes have just brought out a covers album called 1972. Playing some songs from that year.
I was never a huge fan but some of the tracks are pretty good. And quite interesting choices.
I suppose everyone has at least one covers album in them 👍

I thought they were rotten  Which pretty much sums up my ability to spot star quality  I actually grew to like them and I'm quite keen on a lot of Paul Weller's solo stuff. Lots of musical folk born on this day, 28th May, including: T Bone Walker (1910), Gladys Knight (1944) & Kylie Minogue (1968). However the birthday I'm highlighting today is that of John Fogerty, singer/songwriter and guitarist with Creedence Clearwater Revival and latterly a solo artist. 77 today, he is best known in Quo circles for their cover of his 1975 track 'Rockin all over the World'. John has written many memorable songs since the late 1960s. Here is one of my favourites:

Francis Rossi is in good company today, the day of his 73rd birthday. Other birthdays today include Gary Brooker of Procul Harum, Mike Porcaro, Toto's bassist, laToya Jackson and Mel B of Spice Girls fame. But today 29th May is also Noel Gallagher's 55th birthday. Here he is singing one of Oasis's better late period songs. A good tunesmith and an underrated singer is Mr Gallagher.

Marie Fredriksson was born on 30th May 1958. She died in December 2019, aged 61. In 1986, along with singer/guitarist Per Gessle, she formed the hugely successful pop/rock duo Roxette. This is one of their hits from 1992.
