John Bonham was born on this day, the 31st May 1948. He was Led Zeppelin's only drummer and when he died in 1980, the band folded, feeling he was so instrumental to their sound that they couldn't carry on without him. It's difficult to pick a song to celebrate his birthday - there are just so many great tracks to choose from. But I'm going with this one, because it was on their last album, the band were sliding in popularity and yet they come up with a fantastic song like this! And John's drumming is just incredible on it - a mix of the Purdie shuffle and a samba break - and is a real departure from his more recognisable rock orientated progressions.

My dad 31 May 1930. And still going strong. Just called him and he's bright as a button. I hope I have all of his genes! He's never made a record though. Although, at this rate, he's going for the old age record

The big birthday today is that of Bob Dylan who reaches the grand old age of 80+1. He has a huge presence in modern music and a huge discography to boot... and I'm sure most of us here can hum at least a couple of his better known tracks. But today, I'm going to call out the birthday of Rich Robinson, guitarist and co-founder - with his old brother Chris - of The Black Crowes. He was born on 24th May 1969 and is 53 years old. I bought their album 'By Your Side' in 1999 purely on the strength of a 10 minute headphone listen in a record shop. Still love it to this day. Here is the title track with most of the guitar work on it by Rich. All of the guitars!

Born on the 1st June 1947, Ronnie Wood is 75 today. Lots of old tracks of him playing with Jeff Beck, The Faces and The Stones, but I've chosen this recent clip where he plays lead and rhythm guitar on the Jools Holland show. Hope Imelda didn't put him off too much!!

The day following Ronnie Wood's birthday, is that of his drummer for so many decades, the late, great Charlie Watts. He was born on 2nd June 1941 and died last year aged 80. Here is a clip of the Stones in concert with a camera focussing on Charlie. I don't know the technical term, or perhaps it's because of his jazz background, but he has an unusual, awkward-looking, right-hand drumstick movement, deliberately holding off hitting the drum on certain downbeats. Anyone able to elaborate?

Two fantastic rock and roll musicians share birthdays today, the 3rd June. The first is Ian Hunter of Mott the Hoople fame. Would you believe it, he's 83 years old today!!! And the second birthday on 3rd June is Suzi Quatro, who is 72 years young! It was a hard job choosing between them - so I've posted a clip showing each in their heyday! The first is Mott live in 1971, before 'All the Young Dudes' fame came along, while Suzi's clip is from a live show in Japan in 1975. A regret in my musical life is not having seen a Suzi Quatro show!

Two cracking videos, quodec 👍 Never seen either before. Suzi is still producing some great stuff and has brought out albums the last couple of years. Not sure about Ian Hunter. But 83? Why would you? I'm so glad I was a teenager in the 70's. I may be biased but I'd say I was blessed

A quiet day on the birthday front, but the one standout for me is the birthday of Michelle Phillips, who was born on 4th June 1944, making her 78 years old. In 1965, she was co-founder of The Mamas & the Papas vocal harmony group - alongside John Phillips, Denny Doherty & 'Mama' Cass Elliot. They had a couple of huge hits in the mid-60s, 'Californian Dreamin' and 'Monday Monday', but on listening to their collection I'm going to play one of their lesser hit singles, from 1966, 'I Saw her Again' (Michelle is third from left in the image). Like Fleetwood Mac a decade later, the song reflects ongoing infidelities in the group; with Michelle going with Denny behind her husband John's back, while Cass was in love with Denny.....its a complicated story, look it up!!

Tom Evans, Badfinger's bassist, songwriter and co-singer was born on this day, the 5th June 1947. There has been a lot written about this band, about their unscrupulous manager, about money disappearing (where did we hear that before!) and horrendous record contracts, culminating in two members of the band taking their own lives, including Tom in 1983. But thankfully their music lives on. This is Tom doing main vocals on their first hit, a Paul McCartney song, released in December 1969.

American power pop/rock singer/guitarist Dwight Twilley, born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on the 6th June 1951, is 71 today. Here is his first single released in 1975. I'm intrigued with his bassist's unorthodox way of playing! Never seen fretwork like that before!

Dean Martin, Tom Jones, Paddy McAloon & George Ezra all share a birthday today, 7th June, with Prince Rogers Nelson, born on this day in 1958. Sadly Prince passed away much too early in 2016, aged just 57. Again, like other musicians noted previously, there are many songs one could pick to celebrate his birthday, so after some deliberation I'm going with this upbeat blues/rock song 'Rock & Roll Love Affair', which he performed on the Jimmy Kimmel show in 2012.

Great video. Never seen or heard that before 👍 What a genius that man was. He could sing and play in just about any style flipping from soul to funk to rap to out and out rock. All with great skill and authenticity. Much like Bowie, he simply couldn't - and wouldn't - be pigeonholed.

Lots of significant musical birthdays today: Nancy Sinatra (82), Mick Box (75), Bonnie Tyler (71), Mick Hucknell (62) and Kanye West (45). However the musician whose birthday I'm noting today is William 'Boz' Scaggs, who was born in Canton, Ohio, in 1944, making him 78 today, the 8th June. And the reason I've picked him is that he released one of my favourite non-Quo shuffle songs back in 1977 (and taken from the album 'Silk Degrees' released the previous year). This is a live version from 2014 with Boz on vocals.
"Lido missed the boat that day, he left the shack. But that was all he missed, he ain't comin' back."
