I know he gets on people's nerves. And he does have, or used to anyway, a pretentious side that tended to irritate. But I've always liked U2. More their slightly later stuff such as Zooropa and Pop than the albums that gave them fame originally. But most of their output is very listenable. Happy birthday, Your Boneness

Eric Burdon, lead singer with The Animals, is 81 today (11/5/1941). This is their UK no. 2 hit from 1965. And what a great vocal from the 24 year old Eric!

Such a great talent and nice guy. He and I recorded a song together way back in 1990 and we had so much fun in the studio.

Steve Winwood, is 74 today, born on 12th May 1948. Such a talented musician, being mainly known as an keyboardist, vocalist and songwriter. I could have picked many tracks to celebrate his birthday, but I'm going with this solo version of one of the 60s hits he had with The Spencer Davis Group.

Stevie Wonder was born on 13th May 1950 and so is 72 today. I could have played 'Happy Birthday to ye' but instead I'm going to celebrate his birthday with this fantastic love song from his 1972 album 'Talking Book'. Not big into love songs per se but this track has always resonated with me!

Jack Bruce was born on this day, 14th May, in 1943. Well known as the bassist and co-singer in the 60s super-group Cream, he latterly played in several other bands and also recorded solo. He died in 2014. He wrote this song in 1967, just 24 years old!

British musician Brian Eno was born on 15th May 1948, making him 74 today. He played synthesiser with early Roxy Music and recorded and produced many albums. In this Roxy Music video, he is the one with the silver glam jacket.

Roger Earl, Foghat's drummer since 1971, was born on 16th May 1946 - and is therefore 76 today. Here's a live track from 1974 where he displays a tidy shuffle on 'Nothing I won't do'.

Paul Di'anno, Iron Maiden's second vocalist ('78 - '81) was born on 17th May 1959, so he's 63 today. Here he is on Maiden's first single 'Running Free' from 1980.

Albert Hammond was born on 18th May 1944, making him a sprightly 78 years old today. He's written lots of famous songs, including 'The Air that I Breathe' and 'Free Electric Band', but here's one of the first ecological songs I've heard (along with Joni Mitchell's 'Big Yellow Taxi') from 1972.

Pete Townshend, born on 19th May 1945, is 77 today. He's in good company too, for the 19th May is also the birthday of Grace Jones, the late great Dusty Hill, Joey Ramone and AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd. But back to Pete. Here he is in a 1964 clip (great quality for its age), when The Who were known as The High Numbers!

The inimitable Joe Cocker was born on this day, the 20th May 1944 - and died aged 70 in 2014. This Leon Russell song, sung by Joe, has been a favourite of mine for many years.

Not big into love songs per se but this track has always resonated with me! Not my favourite Stevie Wonder track, I must admit But a very talented, and influential, musician/composer I've also always been rather keen on Roxy Music. And Bryan Ferry as a solo artist. But anyway, a small anecdote which is why I'm here. I used to go for a sports massage once a week until about 15 years ago and the woman always played the same CD. It was Brian Eno's album, Apollo: Atmospheres & Soundtracks. I grew to love it and still do. Ambient long before they invented ambient. Or certainly before trance or dance took on the handle. Just saying
