I get where fans come from regarding the name and what it means to them. If the current band were renamed then would they still get the animosity?
Trouble is Quo have become a bit like bands like Deep Purple/Fleetwood Mac and especially Dr Feelgood. Where members have left and at least one member has carried on then they have also left and the replacement members carry on with the name. Triggers Broom bands I call them.
The problem with everything is the marketing men make the decision's regarding names these days.
I notice Fleetwood Mac fans are quite split with Peter Green fans not accepting the Rumours line up.

I'd personally have no problem whatsoever.
It's not called Status Quo...It doesn't represent that sound or what it mean't to people.*
Happy days.
*Real fans that is

The thing with other bands who keep touring despite losing most of their original members is that they try to promote themselves as credible.
Porter thinks Quo are a comedy act and promotes them as such. It's as far removed from Piledriver as you can get.
But there's an audience for that type of promotion, which is why the band keeps going.
You'll find that CQ fans are so into Quo because no other band promotes in this way.

Not true of the ones I know.

I may be in a small minority but I don’t really care. Rick was in the band when I decided I’d had closure for all thing# Status Quo. Dublin was my ending. As Ive said before for me once they sacked John and knifed Alan they should have changed the name as they were no longer Status Quo.

Don't see how anyone could have a problem with that
As for the animosity, I think now it will continue for as long as francis continues to say the wrong things. The "FR SQ band" playing DDMC in the "new" style but supposedly as a tribute to Rick would invariably attract criticism.
A bit of class would go further than any change of name
Think the whole "carrying on as if nothing had happened" thing riled me, and would have done if it had happened under a new name. SQ needed to take a break and take stock. They didn't, and it's too late now

The only way forward is to become FRQ,they have now the same number of original members as JCQ. As for Dr Feelgood let’s not even go there Cheers

I have loved the different lineups up until 2012... Then the reunion came, and boy did I fall in love again...... Then Loafer man spoketh... and the farce became painful. So... My opinion is that Loafer Man and management has brought the animosity upon themselves, via the countless times that the words has fallen out of the insecure's little bread fork.. without any connection between mouth and brain... Geeee... It could have been so different. But this way seems to be OK with a lot of people, so I must be in the wrong, right? doh If they changed the name now, they would sink into oblivion.... Quo is a name that many recognize, Loafer Man Band? Nope....

Of course, one big difference is that the Rumours era line up rebuilt the band to new heights based on the new material they were recording & performing. They didn't spend 30+ years releasing largely unsaleable shite & then depend on a live set almost entirely filled with Peter Green era numbers.

The difference to Dr. Feelgood is that their guitar player plays the old songs properly and with respect. The last Status Quo Gig was Dublin 2014 everything after was Panto Quo and now it is Francis Rossi‘s Quo. I prefer John Coghlan‘s Quo.

If Rossi had the moral and the guts to announce that "Status Quo is over for ever, however I like touring / the money so bad that I have decided to start a new band called Francis Rossi's Quo"and do my own versions of the old classics" I would even concider go see them/him if they would play at some club nearby. But as long he is pretending that his current band actually is Status Quo I wouldn't get near them; even if I got paid to do it!
