PRESS STATEMENT – 15th September 2016 Rick Parfitt Status Quo regret to announce that guitarist Rick Parfitt has been ordered to rest for the remainder of the year at the very least following on from his heart attack and associated complications following a Quo show in Turkey on June 14th. This means, of course, that he will be unable to take part in the forthcoming ‘Last Night Of The Electrics’ European and UK tour which commences in Vienna, Austria on October 12th. Simon Porter, the band’s manager comments, “Although Rick is recovering well and is now able to lead a relatively normal day to day life, he is far from being fit enough to undertake the rigours of Quo’s touring schedule. Perhaps now is the time to reveal that Rick actually ‘died’ for several minutes directly following his heart attack which resulted in mild cognitive impairments for which he continues to receive neuropsychological support. His medical team continue to be confident of a full recovery, but Rick’s absolute priorities for the foreseeable future are for his health and wellbeing and to be able to see his eight year old twin children Tommy and Lily grow up. To this end, Rick may well have performed his last show with Quo, but no final decision will be made until next year. Regardless, it is his wish that the band continue to tour as planned and he will always be a part of Quo’s numerous other off stage activities”. Rick has given his full blessing for the band to continue to honour their touring schedule in order to not let down the fans. Until the end of 2016, Status Quo will continue to utilise guest musicians. Irish guitarist Richie Malone, who is currently playing with the band, will continue in this role at least until the end of Quo’s European schedule which concludes in Paris on December 4th. Freddie Edwards, son of Quo bass player John 'Rhino' Edwards also stepped in for Rick during some of the Summer shows. Rick will also use his convalescence period to compose songs for a long overdue solo album which he plans to record early next year. In the meantime, both Rick and the band would like to thank the fans for their continued understanding and support. Ignore this Davy..watch the sky interview that'll rolling all day. He's not coming back!

I took this at Blackpool Opera House, December 1990, on the RAOTY 25 tour.
This was the last time they played a decent version of 4500 Times.
It's my favourite photo of Rick.

'Cognitive impairments'... that's worrying And to all those who kept questioning why there were no health updates or word from Rick during the summer and everyone questioning the integrity and silence of the rest of the band and management - what the hell do you think "cognitive impairment" means? Do you think it would have helped his recovery in any way to have had the internet buzzing over his mental capacity? There are reasons for medical confidentiality. Such a major heart attack followed by resuscitation always bears the risk of other functions being affected. Modern medicine is wonderful but don't be fooled by films and TV showing miraculous outcomes with no after effects after the deployment of crash teams in hospital. Rick and the band have spoken out as soon as they were able. I hope he continues to improve and has many more years left to enjoy his young children growing up and the appreciation of his lifelong fans even if he is no longer gigging.

This is a very sad day. I feel disappointed for Rick that he couldn't go out on a high - doing what he does best and rocking hard. I feel the time has come to retire the Status Quo name. For fans of an older vintage SQ will always be the FF. For younger fans it at least has to be RP & FR. Without Rick it just isn't SQ. So if Francis wants to continue acoustically, do it under another name, but show your fellow founding band mates some respect at last and don't call it SQ. Sad day indeed, but it cannot be said we didn't see it coming. I'm going to the O2 - Rick or no Rick - but after that it's "A dios, amgos" - a parting of the ways. I'm not in the least interested in an acoustic Quo, and if Francis wants to use the Status Quo brand, well, that's his right, but just don't expect me to spend money on it. If they came to St. Albans or Stevenage I'd go along, but if it came to a choice between Dr. Feelgood or Status Quo, the Doctor wins (btw - THEY don't have ANY original members...). Good luck Rick - and thanks.

Thanks for Everything Rick!! quorp
I'd really hope the band come together at one point doing a last great rock'n roll/blues album. I know it's just a dream but why can't I be allowed of dreaming?

No real surprise but you still held on hoping it wouldn't happen. There appears a real possibility that Rick could die on stage and no one wants that to happen as much as we would love to see him back on stage.
I wish him a long and happy life and for all the great times we've had together, I thank you.
I'm away to listen to the live album. letsrock

Today is indeed a very sad day. I personally love all versions of Quo (though in recent years FF has topped my list) but today's announcement signifies the end of Quo for me.
I feel honoured to have seen the Quo live from 1992 finishing up in 2014 with the Frantics in Manchester. I was thinking about getting a ticket for Manchester in December seeing as it's the last time to see them electric but with this news I shall pass.
Thanks for all the good times Quo & I hope Rick recovers to lead a happy retirement...

He's done Will.On the Sky interview he alludes to the fact that every gig makes his heart race,or words to that effect.I would think that your heart suddenly stopping or the build up to it must be fcuking agony and then it suddenly stops, your heart stops beating and you start to die.I would not chance that one again.I worked with an old boy who had a heart attack and he said the pain was absolutley unbelievable.

No....I don't mean in relation to Rick and his health. I mean, I smell a rat in the way this has been dealt with by management.

Hey Gaz. We are very different people but gee have had similar situation. Received my plectrum at Thebarton down front right under his guitar at the stage. Great memories. Mate, he is not dead so wish him well and look forward to his solo album if ever happens. May well get out some Quo tonight and watch with a beer in hand. Power playing on Blue Eyed Lady was special from the reunion gigs. Rockon Wilquo We're fans of Quo therefore not so different really.

Today isn't a day to comment on management, Francis and handling of the tours, the SQ name in respect of Ricks absence.
Its just a day to wish him well with his family. Its also a day to tell him that he has not let any fans down - on the contrary he has given decades of un-abounded joy to millions.
Look after yourself Rick! xx
