Angry. Great swagger. Top tune. The Stones are back with a crackerjack single (and fab video to boot). Now....ok, I know Quo is only Mr. Rossi, but....if only they had stuck to their roots and didn't sell out to crass commercialism. Angry sounds fresh, inspiring and bloody good old fashioned rock and roll fun. I not really a Stones fan but have to admire them for coming up with this gem in their late 70's (early 80's for some).
Respect where respect is due.
Sorry, not really Quo related but just goes to show how deprived we are of good rock!

I like the Stones new single Angry, sort of track they could have done in the 70's and nobody would have bat an eye.
I was listening to this when it came out last week and thought that it kind of worked, where the track Backbone from Quo, in my view anyway, didn't really.
Backbone had this great guitar intro, then it just underwhelms a bit, could have been better to me, as the idea was good and song ain't bad, just the overall track and what they did with it let's it down.

To be fair, the Stones have had their dodgy moments across the decades like everyone else. The stuff they were shoving out in the 80's wasn't great. But they seemed to get a new lease of life around the end of the 90's and their albums have been terrific since. Bridges To Babylon from 1999 (or thereabouts) was superb. For me, there is a sort of parallel there. In terms of my own interest and taste anyway. Angry is really good. Like most Stones material, nice and loose. Like they were 18 and practising in a garage They are also experts at marketing and promotion. The push for Hackney Diamonds has been slick and the merch is already on their website to pre-order; as is the album in various packages. They also have their own app by the way.

It's not bad. it's a bit Stones-by-numbers, which to be fair is what everyone wants from them now. I ran it up on YouTube, and when it finished it went straight into Touring by the Ramones. Now THAT's rock n roll!

Thanks for sharing your love of this track. I'm moving this thread to the other bands section where we've already been discussing their single and album release. And I get your frustration to rant at Quo, but in these dark times, what does that achieve. Glad you found some music to enjoy!

I'm still feeling it's rather addictive power 5 days in. They've had fine singles since the 90s renaissance, 2020s 'Living In a Ghost Town' was a cracker for example, as were the three terrific singles from Babylon - Saint of Me, Anybody Seen My Baby, Out of Control. Even 2012s Doom & Gloom was a blast of pure rock energy. Cannot believe its 11 years since that one!
Angry has that indefinable spark, whatever that is - the space between riffs, the rhythm section swing, a cool swagger. It is something they do so well. Angry isn't among their very best but it is perfect as a single in 2023. The swagger is present, that lovely push-pull between guitars and rhythm. Particularly from the solo to the wonderful ending.
Heard it on radio today and it sounded amazing. The marketing and album teasing has been top notch, very well conceived.
The next single is likely the 7 minute gospel 'Sweet Sounds of Heaven' with Lady Ga Ga & Stevie Wonder.

With the lack of new material written over the years, it ought to be at least respectable 😂 Am I right that the album is the first in 18 years?

A good track the video a bit stereotypical stones (in this pc world we live in lol) hope the album is just as good. They may only have two original members left and wasn’t confident they would do much on record again. As above says most of their output since the 80s onwards was very patchy but maybe this time they waited to get it all right as one last hurrah so to speak. They wouldn’t really have wanted to go out with their last original album nearly 20 years ago and a cover one as last thing they recorded.

With the lack of new material written over the years, it ought to be at least respectable 😂 Am I right that the album is the first in 18 years? Last album of originals, yes. Coincidentally 18 years to the day, Sept 6th, as the press launch for new album. They had the excellent 'Blue & Lonesome' in 2016. It went to No.1 in over a dozen or so countries, two in particular (Holland & Argentina) was No.1 for 11 weeks. Almost the whole winter! They've spent the last decade plus really on legacy - issuing the very long awaited archive releases; DVD and CD, as well as quite a few new documentaries. Most every year since 2010 a show from the archives, including some of the most holy grail items, and deluxe sets for four of their key records. The bonus discs were mostly quality, enough tracks per deluxe to make them albums on their own. One of my most listened to albums past year has been the 11 archive tracks included on the sets for Goats Head Soup & Tattoo You. Keith's solo 2015 album 'Crosseyed Heart' is a charmer. His biggest solo success, outselling both previous collections from 1988 & 1992. I really enjoyed A Bigger Bang from 2005. Too long at 16 tracks, but my 12-track 'A Better Bang' is a sizzler. Not everything across the 16 track opus was worthy but it certainly had enough quality tracks to make it an album I love to revisit. Prior to Bigger Bang, the 90s albums, Voodoo & Babylon, were mostly terrific. Big sellers; the three studio albums 1989-1997 are in the Top 15 of their catalogue. Voodoo was over 6 1/2 million. Their renaissance was huge that decade from '89-'99 (regrouping for Steel Wheels in early '89 to finishing Babylon tour in '99), touring was bigger business than ever before, and the album quality really improved after being a bit lost in the mid 80s. One of my own favourites is '89s Steel Wheels. The 90s work is more critically admired, but it has such a groove to it. Two of their finest ballads are on it. The tour really marked the 2nd phase of their career and every tour since influenced by the Steel Wheels juggernaut.

Even 2012s Doom & Gloom was a blast of pure rock energy. Cannot believe its 11 years since that one! I can scarcely believe that either I loved that single. An absolute cracker and their best in a very long time. You're right about the deluxe albums. Exile On Main Street included practically a completely new album of studio material. Not demos either! I don't have many of the others. I got that one because it's a particular Stones favourite of mine. I'm also glad someone else likes Bridges To Babylon as much as me. It was battered a bit by the music press at the time (as was the tour) but both were outstanding.

The feel and mood of the album, the excellent singles & videos. Keith rates it one of his own favourites when asked a few years ago. The tour was great - the official releases and the TV specials of shows from 1997/1998 display a band at a latter day peak. They'd really grown into the elder statesmen role; how they were dressed etc. How do you present to the world as a rock act in your mid-50s, sartorially, creatively, in the live arena - there hadn't been many before. Plenty since.

Singles aside I’m not the biggest stones fan. But I think the new single is cracking.
I like some girls, exile on Main Street sorry but I find it repetitive. Start me up is another cracker.
