Start Me Up!
I think they began and ended the 80s in fine style. Emotional Rescue & particularly the excellent Tattoo You (and its accompanying tour) began the decade. TY was made primarily of tracks recorded '78-'80 for the Rescue sessions, with four from earlier in the 70s. Waiting on a Friend prime example - the basic tune was from '72, but lyrics, melodies and the wonderful sax overdubs all added in '81 to make it a song.
Exile on Main Street was made from songs in various stages of completion 1968-1971, TY similar practise but most from the 2-3 years prior.
I'm a big fan of Steel Wheels and its mammoth tour from '89. The album sparkles, quality material there.
The middle two are fine albums but by Stones standards not up there at all with the greats. Undercover is highly rated in fan community and 50/50 critically.

The Stones album leaked earlier today ahead of release this Friday. Been listening all afternoon - no spoilers or reviews, just to say it is a spiffing corker of a record Ordered the Japanese Edition I'm hoping to receive Friday or Monday; I like the packaging with the cool Obi strip and bonus track (Living In a Ghost Town - released 2020 but nice to have it on an album proper, even as a bonus).

That Sweet Sounds of Heaven will have to grow on me. I'm not too sure I like it that much.

That Sweet Sounds of Heaven will have to grow on me. I'm not too sure I like it that much. That's why the perfect name would have been 'Sweet Sounds of Subjective Heaven' Kidding - diff strokes and all that. I'd say there's plenty on there you'll enjoy though. Is it the best album since whenever? That's the press's game; it's just a damn fine Stones album in 2023.

Here's a taster from the album, which includes Macca on the bass. You're never too old to rock n roll!

Just listened to the album, very very good. Superb sound Been listening a few days, have to say I love it. Not a single track I'd skip. Early days, but it sounds so good to me I know it's a keeper. So many of the tracks I could choose as my favourite. Not concerned with where it may place in the catalogue, just delighted to have a record of such high quality from them.

Listened several times, excellent album. I'm not a huge Stones fan, but know them well enough to feel the excitement of hardcore fans around the globe

I'm astounded to be honest. Best thing they've done in at least 30 years, if not 50! They still sound completely on top of their game, in fact more than ever! Perfect blend of riffs, ballads, and blues.

A lot of credit needs to go to the producer for making it sound fresh and both up to date and from the 70s! And to the band for letting him!
Quo should've got this guy.

It certainly has a terrific sound. Loud and energetic and the guitars have a wonderful resonance. It may actually be the best 'sounding' Stones album I've ever heard. It's crystal clear. There is a nice balance of those crunchy Stones riffs and the lighter country feel songs. Ending with a superb blues track that could have been recorded by them any time since 1964. And by anyone else since about 1930! My reservations about the Lady Gaga contribution were misplaced. It's actually pretty good. I didn't think they could top 1999's Bridges To Babylon; not at their age. But they have. And then some. One guy in his 80's, another two approaching that milestone. It's frankly astonishing. And pretty much demonstrates that age means nothing. This album is as fresh as they ever sounded. Brilliant

It's quite something alright; almost a week in and it's playing as I type this, still the same excitement as on initial listens.
First listening was on a very good set up on the laptop (better than my phone YouTube) and the wonderful sound really came through. Guitars perfectly produced, sound is amazing - reminds me of albums like 'Black & Blue' for such crystal clarity without giving up the power and tone of the guitars.
Whatever that indefinable charm is that powers some of their very best, this one has it. Not to the same lofty heights as the iconic heavyweights, but a brilliant Stones album in it's own right. The swagger, even at this advanced age, is scintillating (particularly on such a dance floor slinky groove like 'Mess It Up').
They not only sound like the Rolling Stones should, but that they have something genuine to say. All these years later. Wonderful!
