I was 14 when this came out. Even then i thought 'what is going on here?' and was doubting my commitment to the band.
When i first heard '1000 Years' stuck on the end of the album, i remember thinking 'that's it'. It sounded like a swansong to me, like a sad goodbye, melancholy and all out of gas, and luck. The end.
As cammythemortonfan said above, "The first problem is the songs. There aren’t enough rock songs on there."
But, thanks Victor, christmas has come early this year - we can all have a good old moan!

It's an album my father only ever played for me once as kid, on the turntable and he never had it on cassette in the car.
Little Dreamer is fine, PR is fine, Power of Rock is fine... Just all badly produced and they sound awful! Not At All sums this album up...Out of ideas, unoriginal and downright lazy. That track in particular sounds like it was recorded at a soundcheck. Jeff Rich should be ashamed of his performance on that song.
FR wanted to go down the route of Address Book, 1000 Years, Throw Her A Line, Tommy etc...Fine! Problem is, he's not very good at writing that kind of material so it was always going to end up like this. The stuff he wrote like this, between 1973 and 1980 (FFF, SSMH, Dirty Water, Claudie, etc) ranges from good to excellent and the only way I can explain that is because he had the others and Bob Young, putting their own stamp on those songs. With his material on Perfect Remedy, it sounds like he's calling the shots on how the instruments should be played because Rhino and Jeff are not bland players! It paints a picture of a guy who won the battle but lost the war. He wrote Not At All and it even sounds like it was a token gesture to old Quo fans and that he hated doing it. GDFTFT has a lot of potential and could have been brilliant. Yet, it sounds like any old bog standard country song.
I have zero clue what Pip Williams was doing with this either. The solo to Going Down For The First Time sounds like Barry White, off his face on acid, singing through an empty toilet roll tube. He didn't get a performance out of anyone here. But, on another thought, if he managed to pull those songs up to how they are on the album, I am petrified to even think how bad they were before he got there!!
"There aren't enough rock songs on there" Put simply, it should be said that there aren't enough good songs on there! I have no problem with artists, wanting to expand on their sound or to try different things. I'm a big fan of Queen, U2 and Michael Jackson. They all expanded on their sound and went down different musical avenues, to various degrees of success. The problem with Quo/Francis here is...When it doesn't work the first or even the second time, stop trying it! We all know the definition of insanity... I didn't see Queen make another Hot Space and I didn't see U2 make another Rhythm and Blues album when they were both savaged!
The cover is cool though. Was always very envious at Quo gigs, when I saw fans with it, stitched onto the back of their jackets

Awful album, just dreadful. I look at Alan's work at this time, The Bombers, and compare it to this stinking pile of feces and shake my head at what could have been.
Probably the worst Quo Lite album of them all. Usually I really like about half the songs on one of their albums, but this one Perfect Remedy is a very good song, Rotten to the Bone is catchy and The Power of Rock isn't bad, while the rest absolutely suck basketballs. I'd rather listen to Bula Quo, that's how bad this is.

Well appears Australia Quo fans dodged quite a few Quo bullets (aka duds) as this ‘album’ also never saw the the light of day here. Never heard it and don’t intend to.

At the time Francis said "it sounds like there's a band in there playing ", which speaks volumes for how bad things had already got
He also said he thought the material was very strong.
Power of rock was the only thing to get excited about ,this I think was largely down to the Val doonicanism of all else!
Staying positive...I like the way I am, quite a nice tune. The title track has some quality writing with some good lead work. But it's so clean and clinical ,so wrong for Quo. Always enjoy man overboard.
And yes ,nice album cover ,merchandise etc that year. And a fantastic tour
Is 1000 years the worst ever Quo ballad? It's got to be up there 🤢

Wow it seems that I'm in minority here liking this album. Gone thru the slips is a catchy pop rock song, Perfect Remedy, Little Dreamer & Rotten to the bone is catchy as hell. Adress Book and Going gown is great country rock songs imo. Sounds like standard Rossi-country.
Good album to me

Does anyone know what "gone through the slips" actually means?

As a kid I always liked the cover. Really do nowadays. Colorful and nice with the guitars. My parents got the UK vinyl import of the album, and it was nice to see a yellow label instead of the spaceship label spinning in the turntable.
The album...Well, I think I've never heard it complete until I was 10-11. It is one of those albums that I have on vinyl and I had a fear of heard them when I was younger (Broke or scratch them with the stylus...Maybe this album was the correct one to start hearing vinyl!), so all that I always heard of it was the songs my father played: Little Dreamer and The Power of Rock (skipping the Francis first part) and not so often Perfect Remedy and Man Overboard.
I really like Little Dreamer, always loved it. That intro give me always good memories from when I was younger. Even I can remember the excitement that I had when I discover one of the mix-tapes my father had. On the Side A: Full of Dr. Feelgood. Side B: Started with this. (and then, some songs from the Live album...That was another fabouls moment, because I didn't know they had a Live album, but maybe in another post from the Live album I'll talk about it). I don't know why my father recorded Throw Her a Line too. That was another introduction of a song from this album.
And I remember the first time hearing the full The Power of Rock. I thought something like "Hey, this is like Slow Train, the first verses are almost the same as the last verses...And a rockin' good ending!". (...Well...Now I'm not sure if it is LIKE that...But a really good song anyways. The best in years in my opinion).
But the rest of the album...Even when I was young I didn't get most of it, and still don't get it now. Too much 80's production and country songs. Except for 1000 Years. I don't know, when I got a digitalized version of the album, I liked it, and nowadays I can't skip it.
About the B-Sides, I think they can get rid of Tommy or Going Down for the First Time and put Rotten to the Bone. I liked it the first time I heard it, and still do, but the others...Meh, I can't even bother of commenting them.

I think I’m lucky.
I’d given up on all things Status Quo. Heard it via a friend.
I’m not going back to it now.
There are some songs I remember and others can’t say I know it.
Power of rock is a terrible rip off the voice with a reasonable guitar jam I think from what I remember.
I like the start of Not at all. Like the first few bars before it goes all shit.
Artists often drift from what they’re good at because in their heads they wish they were something else. Unless your Angus Young or Kerry King.
Francis and maybe Rick wanted to be light entertainment. Fortunately for us the record buying public weren’t as keen. Eventually they forced him/ them into a u turn.
