I'll hold my hands up here and say that the song itself is not as bad as I remember. I haven't listened to it in decades, despite it being included on all manner of remasters and deluxe editions. Nope. Once and once only (...and also on an unissued/withdrawn Dutch thing) Sorry, my mistake. I thought it had appeared on at least a couple of releases. Whereas it appears twice on the one release! The deluxe Back To Back. I tend to get my Modern Romances mixed up with my I Wonder Why's because they're largely ignored when I get them In fact there are three versions of I Wonder Why on the deluxe edition. THREE!! Coz it's that good obviously As already stated, Modern Romance is listed on the unreleased version of Collected but seems to have been removed (along with King Of The Doghouse and In The Army Now (2010). I must pay more attention to things and not be so selective with my choice of listening. Or reading

Two versions of Modern Romance and three of I Wonder Why. And not one of them a Quo recording! I didn't think so, although there was a story doing the rounds a while back that they recorded I Wonder Why. But I suspect that was just Francis and Andy mucking around in the mid-80's.

Two versions of Modern Romance and three of I Wonder Why. And not one of them a Quo recording! Supposedly, one was a Quo recording, I believe. Another was the Rossi/Frost version and the final one was the extended version of the Rossi/Frost one.

A Quo recording by name only maybe? Sounds like more or less the same instrumentation as what was used in the re-recording of 'Going Down Town Tonight' so i'm putting my money on Francis, Bernie, and Andy mucking about in the studio as mortified puts it best! Drum machine, synthesized bass, and no Rick i'm pretty certain.

Really ? I actually don't mind Big Man at all, unlike Modern Romance and that acoustic Don't drive my car

Only fitting they included two versions of MR then. And called it deluxe! Yeah, this is one of those things I was involved with that I wish I could re-do... I mean, things were fluid in this era; Jealousy and Doesn't Matter from 1982 are not real Quo recordings, as are GDTT and the first version of I Wonder Why (which was intended for the b-side of Too Close to the Ground that was then not released, and already on the 2006 remaster of the album), while Andy and Pete are on some of the Rossi/Frost recordings, so there is some continuity, and I think it's OK that those songs have gotten a CD release, but of course it's heavily skewed towards Francis' endeavours while Rick's and Alan's are not represented. Looking back I wish that I could've at least gotten the Milton Keynes Mystery Medley on there... I don't really know why it disappeared, it was still part of the first draft!
