Never seen this ....
Terrible quality but an interesting curio.
What were they thinking?

My faded memory and all that, but I am fairly sure I watched this curiously odd video for the first time when Rossi had been interviewed by Selina Scott, on the sofa on 'Breakfast Time' TV in around 1985. 10 years later Selina Scott would of course become better known for her interview with D Trump!
After watching the video, I seem to remember Selina asking Francis as to "where's Bernie?" (a question that would be asked quite a bit until Bernie's sad story end). I think Francis joked back that Bernie was hiding behind the sofa as too scared to be interviewed on TV!
Bernie didn't seem to look completely at ease in the few TV appearances, when performing 'Modern Romance' and 'Jealously'. Francis seemed to be over compensating by over doing the side glances and banter chat thing on stage with Bernie that he did with Rick, but it wasn't working for me for some reason. I thought at the time that it would be better if Rossi dropped that stuff and just got on with performing the song.

I can only recall seeing Francis and Bernie together on TV twice. Once, as fretbuzzzzz says, performing Jealousy, which was on "Cheggers Plays Pop" or some such kids programme and in the celebrity audience for "An Audience With Billy Connolly". Unfortunately, very like Francis's solo material with King Of The Doghouse, it just wasn't popular. It was too lightweight and throwaway. We all know pop can be that but timing is everything and it was generally the complete opposite to anything that was being played on the radio both in 1985 and 1995. He does like his 'sing-a-long' does Francis ( Backbone is testimony to that) but without the powerful guitars behind it, it doesn't do anything for me.

I've seen that footage only on this board and I immediately loathed it. It was put up twice, by the same person: our revered grand chief. The song (?) still gives me the creeps and I refuse to listen to it ever again.

Drugs. It's the only thing I can think of Francis had been a huge fan of all those, off-the-wall, Mel Brooks movies. When seeing this particular clip again, assuming Francis had any say in the direction of the video, perhaps it was an attempt at capturing something of those comically zany and absurd dance routines in those movies?...on a very very low budget! There again, you're probably right...drugs!

I was a huge fan of those Mel Brooks films myself. But Mel Brooks this isn't! I'll hold my hands up here and say that the song itself is not as bad as I remember. I haven't listened to it in decades, despite it being included on all manner of remasters and deluxe editions. But that doesn't mean I'm going to dig it out and play it shortly I managed to get hold of a copy of Rick's Recorded Delivery like everyone else but Flying Debris seems to have been very hard to come by. Maybe just as well Although I did like Where Are We Now, the B-side of Jealousy. Ish. Maybe that's because it was like Quo! Well Quo around that time

The man is very confusing but I like it when he's switched on to rock.

The man is very confusing but I like it when he's switched on to rock. I watched this then spotted a little icon of Prince at the bottom (I am a fan ) and clicked on it to see what it was. Jesus!! It was wonderful. It's a collection of 'legends' playing While My Guitar Gently Weeps at some Hall of Fame event (including George Harrison's son who looks just like him!). Prince is on the side-lines largely un-noticed until about 3½ minutes in then he just comes in and WOW! Seriously good. Thank you for that. It's made my day I've always liked the wee purple rascal.

I don’t mind this song. Melodically I think it’s pretty good, it’s a million miles from Quo but still. Always thought the middle 8 that Bernie sings is a blatant lift from In My Life by the Beatles. What’s with the idea of a building site though! ? Where are You Now, the bside to jealousy(?) I only discovered a few years back. Parts of that I really like. But there’s too many different bits going on. The verses are strong though.

I think Selina Scott may well have asked about the building site. Can't remember Francis's exact response now but it may have been along the lines of his anti macho thing and turning perceptions on their head by having builders camping it up etc. Sam Fox in there as well wasn't she? No idea why exactly, as not a psychologist, but somebody having a kick at something?
Nonetheless, an unusual interpretation of the song! Can still remember Pans People's or their later incarnation trying to do a dance interpretation to 'Living On An Island', that seemed bizarre at the time but I don't suppose anyone really cared!
As for the Modern Romance song itself, it just seemed very middle of the road and Radio 2, at a time when Radio 2 was very much the laid back, easy listening alternative to Radio 1, for people over a certain age. Perhaps tuning-in when gardening, ironing or fixing the car. I don't think that would have concerned Rossi though, as he was seeking appreciation for his songwriting across a much wider market. He always said how The Beatles appealed to mums and dads as well as the youth of the day.
When the Modern Romance single had been reviewed on a Radio 1 panel show, I remember that John Peel said he liked Rossi but had no idea what he was trying to do with this song.
