The reason Quo have stayed one step ahead of the ....heads, is paying little attention to these sort of knobhead reviews.
BB isn't 'Hold You Back' but it makes people happy.

0/10, music for demented pensionaries.
When I first heard it in 1988 I couldn´t believe my ears.

Never liked it. There might be a jig in there but it just doesn't live up to Hold you back, Roadhouse blues jig, etc for me

Man, I love reading all those old single reviews from Smash Hits!
I was 15 when BB came out. I'd never really paid much attention to Quo before, but watching them perform BB on Top of the Pops, I was captivated immediately and spent the next year or two acquiring as much Quo as I could. I still have a very soft spot for the original single version, because it reminds me of the joys of discovering Quo afresh. Was it really 30 years ago?!
Of course, the voyage of discovery that BB led me on has taught me that:
(a) with a handful of exceptions, everything Quo recorded before it is vastly superior; (b) with a handful of exceptions, BB is probably the last decent track Quo would record for the next 20 or so years; (c) it sounds very thin and doesn't really work when they play it live, and never has done.
Anyway, not really looking to spark any debate with my comments - call it shite if you want but this song holds a very special place in my heart!

The Birdy song makes people happy, doesn’t make it a good song. It's actually called 'The Birdie Song' and not The Birdy song, a bit more respect please Mr flats! It's a 3 chord classic! In all seriousness though folks, I wish I understood the premise of there being a box of good songs and a box of bad songs in the world. If somebody declares a song to be good then the rest of the world agrees? One person's good can be another person's poison. One of those rules that remains a constant in our strange world. When Jools Holland said something about good songs always shine through, I tried hard to understand him. You either like something or you don't and that isn't about good or bad ...or ugly! The idea that some quality control should exist in something as personal and emotional as music or similar things is being too clinical by far. The reviewer just seemed to be another one of many who had to go down the road of saying all Quo songs sounding the same..yawn yawn etc etc, then has a go at BB for being a bit different but suggesting she actually wants Quo songs to all sound the same. Que? Their other critics used to whack them for not trying different styles etc. My point was that Quo learned to give little attention to these reviews or they would just go round in circles. You go round in circles with the Birdie song dance do you not?...there's some hideous footage on some family movie tapes of moi doing the Birdie song dance in 1981 and going round in circles, a bit embarrassing to be honest.

I hate that I like this song, but to me it's not the same band, so it doesn't undermine Quo. It's not Quo.

The Live Alive Quo performance of BB is the best rendition they have done IMO. Others since then have been for me rubbish and no where near as good LAQ
