Iam inclined to think a valid reason Quo took on Rhino was because in a way he and AL have similar scratchy
type voices. Not sure that explains it right but neither has a smoother voice like Francis or Rick have.
Having said that I do think AL's voice did suit Quo's music where Al wrote a song. Not always, but at least some
of the time.
Now for whatever reason I don't believe Rhino's voice has ever been as good a fit for Quo's music. Sort of a shame but I guess it is what it is. All Imo.

IMO i don't think Rhino's vocal qualities would have an influence in him getting the job with ANY band! Bass playing, certainly, though.

Rhino was asked for the job because he and Jeff Rich worked with Rick on his soloalbum in 1985 when Quo appeared to be over and done. When the record company demanded a new record from what was left of Status Quo Rick introduced Rhino and Jeff to Francis and Andy. Rhino didn't do leadvocal in Quo until many years later.

They're leagues apart in terms of vocals. Alan's comfortably in the top half of the Championship, Rhino's at the foot of the National League South.

Alan was/is Quos best singer imo. Rhino isn't in the same league. Rick came a close second. And I've never liked Rossis singing. Cringeworthy at times for me. 🙄

I think the fact Rhino didn't sing lead vocal on an album until the year 2003 with Riffs, and in concert until much later, would indicate that he wasn't hired for his singing abilities.

Alan was/is Quos best singer imo. Maybe just me, but when i listen to the Live at the NEC album and Backwater segues into Little Lady and Rick starts singing, it's a relief, and Rick sings LL how BW should be sung imo, ie. much better! Actual singing, rather than AL's straining. AL can have a softer voice too, but i'm pretty sure his gruff vocal was a put on, a la Junior's Wailing on the Live! album for the rocker image. Sometimes it's hideously strained, other times it's fine. Maybe he just smoked a LOT more fags than the others?

Please can we not turn this thread into a Rhino bashing thread. He's not everyone's cup of tea music wise but he has been a long standing member now and worked hard to keep Quo on the road. Thank you.

Alan was certainly raspy on early live recordings, but his voice mellowed over the years imo. He certainly sounded smoothest on the Reunions, maybe his larynx protected by not constantly singing. Rhino sounds more slobbery rather than raspy to my ears. Imagine Michael Van Gerwin singing...more like that. Definately shouldn't be used a vocalist for a 'rock' legendary band .
