I am inclined to think a valid reason Quo took on Rhino was because in a way he and AL have similar scratchy
type voices. You're thinking on this simply cannot be correct. Another poster has already mentioned that Rhino did not sing lead vocal on a new studio Quo recording until 2003. Also, back in the late 80's (after Rhino & Jeff joined Quo), Roadhouse Blues & Bye Bye Johnny were kept in the live set. In place of the departed Alan, Rick sang lead vocals on the first of those..... and Francis did so on the second one. Other live tracks performed during the End Of The Road '84 tour that featured Alan on lead vocals were dropped for several years, including What You're Proposing (which featured both Alan & Francis on lead vocals). In 1995, Backwater was back in the Quo live set for a couple of years as was Is There A Better Way during 2008-2009. For each, it was Rick who stepped up to the mic to sing those two tracks.

I got to like Alan's singing pretty quickly, though his isn't a conventional voice. It's the thing I really appreciated most about the "reunion" and the thing I missed most after he left. (Like, I suppose, I miss Rick's singing now.)
I love Rhino but his singing has a bit of trouble with pitch. He's worked on it over the years by performing, and he has got better, but as my late FIL told me, there's a limit to what you can do to grow a singing voice.
I don't think they sound much alike. Pitch-wise,live, Rhino seems to work better on Rick's songs.

There must be another reason why Townsville is wrong on this one. If only someone could enlighten us...

I've always felt that Rhino's voice is more bluesy - reminiscent, in an odd way, of some of the early 40s/50s blues shouters. I don't suppose he ever consciously modeled himself on that singing style, it's just the way he sounds. And I've never had an issue with that. If he were to sing more lead, maybe I would. Dunno.
Alan's vocals, especially on some of the 70s/80s live recordings, do sound a bit like an act. I can listen to it but I don't always find it that pleasant. But it depends on the song and my mood. I certainly would never put him ahead of Rick as a singer (unless we count the reunions).

Alan is the best vocalist Quo had in my opinion So different from Rhino and when you hear him murdering Backwater on recent gigs you can understand why. The only Quo for me is the one with Alan up there rightfully where he belongs. Merry Xmas Cheers

I do think most of the really bad decisions were made once AL left the band.

Back in the 70's and 80's AL was my third favourite as vocalist behind FR and RP.

Back in the 80s Al was my favourite Quo vocalist after Francis.
Rhino isn't exactly a vocalist, he's someone who sings because he likes to. (He is better than me.)

And where does Rhino rank now ? You tell me PF. I asked first lol. From what I’ve heard he’s the worst singer in the band, now and since it formed. But what do you think ?

Backwater should have been the single of choice. Would have been much better than something country sounding.
Epic fail!!!!

Rhino's singing voice isn't anywhere near Alan's in my opinion Your right. Ones in Australia the other ones not.
