I may be in the minority with this...but I still enjoy the album as much as when it came out and play it regularly except for one song only (Crazy Crazy)

All fans are prone to hyperbole, a new album by a favourite band is rated to the sky as the best in aeons. Let a bit of time pass and time to live with it and more realistic feelings happen. Some will still rate it, and some won't. Agreed on Crazy, Crazy; awful. That side of Rossi is so twee sometimes it is hard to wonder how on earth this was deemed quality. But there again, subjectivity.

Still have the album in the car, gets played on rotation with a load of other stuff.
The album is let down by the studio drum sound for me, though beyond that it still holds up. Nothing I would call a highlight but consistent in a way which was something missing on some previous albums.
With Crazy Crazy, I don't know why Rossi didn't just do rock-folk vocals, that he does well as a rule, rather than the odd pseudo Americana country. I know that still wouldn't save it from the gates of hell for some fans. Bizarrely I can listen to that one as part of the album as it is the one track where I like the drums sound on it! They actually sound alive! Andy's keyboards are not too shabby either. Seems a bit out of place and out of sync with the rest of the album though and better suited to Rossi's album with Hannah R. He genuinely loves that sort of stuff. I don't think he included it on the album to annoy us but just making a statement that it is his ball with this particular album.

It's a big part of his sound and what he deems good about himself i guess, but yeah, wouldn't be suprised either!

I read that a while back. Didn't understand a word. Or even most of the photos

I Know the guy that did the engineering - Andy Brook - or rather I know of him. He runs the local cafe / venue which does lots of interesting things for the local community.
However, I think the sound on Bcakbone is weak as anything. Having recently re read Keith Richards autobiography he makes it clear that the essence of recording Rock n Roll music is to capture the 'room', not specifically the instruments.
The drum sound on Backbone is very weak in my opinion. No presence or impact. Frustrating, but just listening to say Just Supposin' its night and day IMO

My main complaints are the snare and hats sound. Plus the reverb. I also think it's a bit boomy sometimes. The level matching between Waiting For A Woman and Cut Me Some Slack is also something I'd have changed. But it has a darker tone, which I like.
There's no Rick on it, so I won't complain about the Rhythm Guitar being too far behind on the mix. I enjoyed Backbone, in general, though.

The snare sound is pisspoor. There are bands recording on shoestring budgets in rudimentary studios that more often than not achieve a clearer and punchier drum sound. Horrid.

....since the last one.
I like Backbone but I knew as soon as I played it a couple of times my enjoyment of it would fade relatively quickly. I still can't put my finger on why but if I was trying to be overly analytical I'd probably say the tracks were maybe too relatively short and punchy all the way through. There are few musical breaks, which is something I like from my Quo albums. When the singing stops and the power/rhythm takes over for a bit. Variety I guess - within the odd song.
I don't dislike any track on the album. But, equally, I'm not drooling with anticipation waiting for anything specific to come on.
As for the sound, I'm no expert but there is a stark difference between Waiting For A Woman and Cut Me Some Slack. I'm a technical idiot so I don't know the sonic reasons why. These are the two best tracks for me but I prefer the sound on the opener. Drums, alas, I rarely notice. They're just there and need to be.

I think the answer is probably best since QPQ
I like all the non-crazy songs and hugely enjoyed the vibe and consistency throughout, despite the drum sound.
It's also a little too soon for me to give a final verdict. I played it to death and dont want to listen to it now. Hopefully in time it will become an album that gets an occasional listen
