Yes! I think we often underestimate how key he was to that golden era sound. If, by quality, you mean the 70s period.

Bob was the glue that held them together.

Yep
The evidence is even there recently. As soon as he came back in 2001, the quality of songs went up. Even though they fell out, as soon as Bob left, Francis started making noises about leaving the band and refused to tour in 1980.
Plus, nicest guy I've experienced within the music business. Asked him to advise me on a band I was when I was 20 and he took the time to respond a few times. Not many would do that

I always thought he must have had something to do with it. As a new fan I did a bit of an analysis of who wrote the "hit" songs plus some of my favourites, and the writing credits for the Quo originals were split pretty much between Francis, Rick, Alan and Bob. Also he clearly providedd some of the drive, and the peace-keeping energy in the band.
I heard that he was edged out mainly through someone or other in the management arena telling Francis (and possibly others) divisive stories about him.

Of course. Just look at the lack of 'quality' of songs with Rossi/Frost.

He said if Bob had been with us, they couldn't have ripped us off. Or words to that effect.

Plus, how good was it to see him on the reunions. A poet in the wings ..and he was of course the unofficial fifth member, so in the classic years must have carried such weight in or on the edge of the band , to be considered more influential than say the keyboard player(s).Accepting that there were various individuals who contributed in this department and certainly not underplaying the vital contribution of keys on classic tracks...give it a blow Bob !

His appearance and talk was the highlight of the Minehead Fan Convention for me. All of you who turned your noses up at the thought of a fan club convention missed a treat. The bands were good too.

Bob wrote great lyrics. The lyrics to Can't Give You More border on genius! If he had written for a more critically acclaimed band he would be much better known.
I think I read somewhere that the divisive stories were started by management as Bob started to get suspicious about money 'irregularities'.
Alan also started to see irregularities a few years later and low and behold he went too. While the Rossi conspiracy theorists blame Rossi and Rossi alone for Alan's departure I've always wondered how much the management stoked the flames of a deteriorating relationship to lead to him leaving (though moving to Australia, drugs, personal issues etc. can't be underestimated).
But on the subjest - Bob... brilliant!

Gave the songs so much substance and meaning. His crowning acheavement imo was his poem on the back of Ma Kellys ! The band reaching out... moths to butterflies.. reaching out etc... bloody brilliant !
