So I was cleaning out the car earlier and found the CD way under the passenger seat so I decided to stick it on when heading into Belfast.
It really struck me how the band were at a real low point during this and signs that things weren't good at the time are evident.
WHO ASKED YOU- "17 years and it ain't worth giving a try you said"... I wonder who Nuff's talking about there
YOUR SMILING FACE- it's pretty evident Parfitt wrote this while in Jersey or wherever it was, reflecting on his relationship and missing Marietta.
LIVING ON AN ISLAND- I think this one speaks for itself.
COME ROCK WITH ME/ ROCKIN' ON- Tedious songs about the tedious life on the road.
RUNAWAY- Similar in a way to YOUR SMILING FACE, hatred for where he was even though it seemed like a good idea.
HIGH FLYER- Nuff's song about hating the whole living on an island phase they went through.
BREAKING AWAY- "Four rockers rollin' with a poet in the wings..." This song is also fairly self explanatory. I don't think he fell off the stage because he slipped...
So, as mentioned on another thread, this could well be seen as a concept album about the troubles of life on the road, and it is a sad album in away. It's evident things were going pear shaped a few years before things actually broke.
It also begs the question...
What was the beginning of the end for Quo? Who or what truly is to blame?

A good album. If any other band had written this sort of stuff we'ed be getting " A true exploration of the loneliness of the archetypal rock stars as they seek stimulation in their celebrity prison" But seeing as it's Quo "Another load of shit that all sounds the same"

While things were not always great between F & A Who Asked You is actually about the Press. By 1979 they were giving them one hell of a pasting it had been bad pre punk but after that it just got worse.

It mainly is about the press as you say but there are some questionable lines, especially as 17 years before 1979 was 1962, and we all know who met who in 1962.

Even in his drugged up state he would not sing a song written by someone else having a dig at him. The band had also been going 17 years as well, I think Alan met Francis in 1961 as that would have been the year they both went to High School.

Generally not as good as the pre-Live! releases but much more Quo sounding than the previous two efforts. Particularly like Breaking Away, but always give the execrable Come Rock With Me / Rockin' On a wide berth.
Perhaps the album is a reflection of what happens if you suddenly hop off the treadmill & find you've got time to think & reflect - it doesn't always lead to happy thoughts.

Come Rock With Me / Rockin' On is the very last time Quo had the Piledriver sound. A special heavy tuning; a 4500esque switch of rhythm - simply IMMENSE. Breaking Away superbly closed the final truly great Quo album. Better than Blue For You. Heavier than OTL. Outstanding. Who Asked You - perhaps the finest song ever written by Quo. Rossi's voice at its best since MOTT. Well done Alan! Spoilt by Runaway, not CRWM/RO in my view. Yep ! I love CRWM / RO !! Runaway is the track from the album I never particularly liked. I used to like the title song but have heard it too often and got a bit bored with it

Another album that just didn't have the classic QUO touch , but we still bought it , we hoped and prayed but alas things got worse .

Methinks it was a bit back on track, but in hindsight, the coke sure makes a difference... + the frossi-rost collaborations.... not my cuppa... But "Breaking Away" is a masterpiece, that harmonica outro... still makes the hair stand... WYW was magic at the time. Out of 10 originals, 8 is fine. And Pip found the sound again! Great guitars on this one,

Or, it could mean, that we've been going for 17 years, how dar you say we're crap. Most bands didn't expect to last more than a few years when they started out. And they'd lasted longer than the Beatles.

There last truly great album. Not a fan of WYW or LOAI. But the rest are great tracks. Breaking Away, a real Quo classic in my view 😉

For various reasons I had always neglected this album.
But in recent years I have come to think it's the album that should have followed Blue for You.
It has its lows but the highs are very special.
