Ah! boingboing got there before me. He is a mathematician too. My wonderful new fbreoptic broadband has been on the blink. I don't think the 2 girls together represents multiplication, it's merely 4 girls = 20, therefore each one = 5, but yes, you could take it as the way you've done it but I don't think it's meant to be that complicated. Basically it is a simple algebraic exercise. When 2 unknowns are placed adjacent to each other with no space or arithmetic operation between them it is always assumed that they are multiplied together. ab=axb=ba

Except that curiousgirl's puzzle looks more realistic in that the tankards are one behind the other so that they can be presumed to be separated.

Basically it is a simple algebraic exercise. When 2 unknowns are placed adjacent to each other with no space or arithmetic operation between them it is always assumed that they are multiplied together. ab=axb=ba That's what I thought at first but, in this particular question, there was an unnecessary multiplication sign in the fourth line which made me think that the two pairs of girls meant "girl + girl + girl + girl" rather than "girl x girl + girl x girl". Also, being really pedantic, if your line of thinking is correct, then there are two answers... 27.65 and 2.35, as 10 has positive and negative square roots.

Just to correct my previous post, the answer can't be 2.35 as the pictures of the two girls aren't negative images. I really do need to get a life

Do you know the girls and they have confirmed it isn't a negative image?
