Ah! boingboing got there before me. He is a mathematician too.  My wonderful new fbreoptic broadband has been on the blink. I don't think the 2 girls together represents multiplication, it's merely 4 girls = 20, therefore each one = 5, but yes, you could take it as the way you've done it but I don't think it's meant to be that complicated.  Basically it is a simple algebraic exercise. When 2 unknowns are placed adjacent to each other with no space or arithmetic operation between them it is always assumed that they are multiplied together. ab=axb=ba |

Except that curiousgirl's puzzle looks more realistic in that the tankards are one behind the other so that they can be presumed to be separated. |

Also, being really pedantic, if your line of thinking is correct, then there are two answers... 27.65 and 2.35, as 10 has positive and negative square roots. |

Do you know the girls and they have confirmed it isn't a negative image? |
