And your point is?....a twig is a branch of a tree, but if you're holding one, you don't say "Look at this tree I'm holding", do you? When I was at school, maths and arithmetic were two different subjects, with two different exams. For me, that's the way it will stay. I hated maths but enjoyed arithmetic. 100% in every arithmetic exam, which I think went to O grade? Anyhoo, we should have a 'pedant' of the year award. freewilly ?

Would be great if I got my arse in gear and actually got any awards sorted

For me, that's the way it will stay. maybe I'm showing my age but when I was in school as a youngster there was no such word as mathematics in the classroom. It was always arithmetic. One exam/test.

Aye.....I got O Grade arithmetic and O Grade maths. On the day of my Higher Grade maths exam, I decided to go to the pub instead. A wise choice. Yes, I got both at O Grade. I am convinced Arithmetic was separated so that some of the windae lickers could get an O Grade as it was pish easy. As for maths, well God only knows where I'd have been without learning about pi, intadgers, isosober triangles and Pythagorus' theorum.

Aye. It's 80. Never noticed the missing I am sexist. Wrong. Right or wrong, at least CG is paying attention. <blush> As for brackets, I see no brackets. Nobody ever managed to prove to me that algebra is actually true.

Bodmas yes, but also as there's no sign between the 2 girls together, it's assumed that it's multiplication, not addition.
So, Bloke = 15 (B&W girl x B&W girl) + (B&W girl x B&W girl) = 20. So, B&W girl x B&W girl = 10. So, B&W girl = Square root of 10 = √10 Green girl = 4
So, Bloke + B&W girl x Green girl = Bloke + (B&W girl x Green girl) = 15 + (√10 x 4) = 27.65 to 2 decimal places

Tʰᵉ Wᵃˡˡ Oᶠ Dᵉᵃᵗʰ You may well be right but I have no idea what answer is. I thought it might pass the time if any of you are bored with wrapping christmas presents etc.. Lets see what the mathematicians on here come up with.

BODMAS 1. Brackets 2. Indices 3. Division or multiplication, as it occurs from left to right 4. Addition or subtraction, as it occurs from left to right Some of you have misinterpreted this rule. You NEVER insert your own brackets into a problem unless it is to factorise eg writing 9+12 as 3(3+4) If we give the symbols letters for simplicity, the problem becomes a+a=30 bb+bb=20 c+c=8 therefore a=15 bb=10, b=√(10) c=4 a+bxc=15+4√(10) =15+12.65 =27.65

I don't think the 2 girls together represents multiplication, it's merely 4 girls = 20, therefore each one = 5, but yes, you could take it as the way you've done it but I don't think it's meant to be that complicated.
