re: the rock bands you referenced v Quo. I wonder if that's because Quo had more hit singles than those groups and so Quo's sound are known to a wider group of people. eg: I can't name any tracks by ACDC or Iron Maiden just from growing up listening to chart music.

I had the same silly from a YM in our pub talking about tribute bands. This was crossing my mind too. Quo had a longer run of singles than most bands except long-haulers like the Stones and the Beatles, who did chart quite a cross section of stuff. One thing that happened then was that Caroline and Paper Plane charted not far apart, and they do have a very similar "look and feel", which stuck in my mind at the time and may have struck other people the same way. I do recall Run To The Hills by Maiden in the charts, but only because I liked the silly video PS after doing my first 10 years as a serious Iron Maiden fan, I still can't tell which song the guitar solos come from But why should I care? If I like something, it can sound the same as something else for all I care! Riffs now that is another matter.

They've had plenty.....I'm a bit younger than some on here so most Quo stuff that hit the charts when I was growing up was utter drivel....give me acdc or maiden any day.

But do you remember any of Maiden of AC in the charts? And can you name their singles?

Quo singles after Whatever you want were very similar. I must admit after Alan left they had a few hits but couldn't name them. Apart from the dreadful In the Army Now and BB. They haven't had a hit since I think 1990. So you have to be a certain age to remember Quo singles in the charts. I can name many DC and Maiden singles even though I don't really follow them. Maiden, Bring your daughter and AC/DC, Thunderstruck. Also DC in the UK weren't really a singles band in the UK in the way Quo were and wanted to be.
