I thought most Quo singles were "samey".
That's why they were the singles in the first place.
A Year, Who I Am or Lonely Man were never going to attract the singles buying public.
After the Island single, more different sounding singles were released, many of which should have stayed hidden on albums (Drive My Car, Margarita, Down Town Tonight).
It is noticeable that the more formulaic were bigger hits though, The Blunderer, Rolling Home, Old Rag & Mess of Blues etc etc.

Some have a similar feel to them ( Dear John, Dreamin', Can't Give You More, I Didn't Mean It, The Way It Goes, All Stand Up etc.); all a similar tempo and all to the untrained ear (i.e. mine ) in a similar key. Deliberate choices for singles obviously. Why is a different discussion altogether. But game shows deal in stereotypes and the two main Quo stereotypes are "they only know three chords" and "they always sound the same". Even the untrained ear can tell that In The Army Now, Burning Bridges and You'll Come Round are poles apart. If there were three poles that is

The static CQ live shows have increased the stereotype of Quo all sounding the same because they focus on the greatest hits - many of them several decades old. A non Quo fan can easily be forgiven for thinking Quo sound the same because the singles are precisely what the band feeds the public ear.
Yet another reason why the FF reunion(s) was so refreshing because the bulk of the set represented quality album material that breaks those commercial sameness perceptions. Ironically many of those non Quo fans would scratch their heads on hearing songs like ASS&W and MOTT !

I'm amazed that as many as 17% of DJ's don't think they all sound the same!!!! That's probably a higher percentage than the general public

DJ's are essentially full of their own ego - so simply saying things to grab attention and seek a reaction is the priority.

...records all start to sound the same. This was a revealed stat (after asking 100 DJ's) on a repeat of "Play Your Cards Right" today. One contestant woman was like "yeah they all do sound the same...". How this sort of received wisdom entered the public consciousness is beyond me. (she had guessed 65%). Another contestant had a white grandad shirt, pin-stripe waistcoat and long hair - and Brucie asked if he liked Quo - he said he didn't. Bloody liar! Ee - aa wes foamin! My wife said - "well they all have that... (impersonates Roadhouse Blues)." I said "looka man, RAOTW, their best known single, doesn't have a shuffle beat, Caroline doesn't, Paper Plane doesn't, Down Down doesn't... and anyway - all ACDC sounds the same, all Iron Maiden sounds the same, all Duran Duran sounds the same! - bands sound like bands. And Quo have THREE singers!" <img src="//images.proboards.com/f/smiley/superangry.png" alt=" " class="smile" contenteditable="false" text=" " Notorious doesn't sound like Ordinary World...Living on an Island doesn't sound like Break the Rules...
