for so long I had forgotten what the actual recorded material sounds like. Just gave Piledriver a blast in the car. Fecking brilliant.
Time to get back on the recorded stuff again

It's easy done! I was bored to death of Caroline until listening to Hello again recently. I think I associate it live with the start of yet another identikit concert.

The drone is tired. I was glad the FF didn't do it

Hi you guys,
I was on the other board for a spell in 2014, I enjoyed it until the negative stuff got to be too much. I´ve checked back there and saw this link on a thread, so here I am dipping my feet in the wáter again.
Anyway, my question: what do you mean by "drone"? Does it have something to do with "Caroline/Bye Bye Johnny"?

Hi Jeffrey, the drone is the way they start the gig

I've always felt studio Caroline is better than the live Caroline. And I know it is controversial, but I cannot stand the drone. the drone is overkill...well past its sell by date..

I agree, I had also been playing the live cd's in the car so much and then when I bought OTL, Quo and Hello, I remembered how brilliant they are. Funnily though, I have always maintained Hello is my favourite (probably because it has ROLD and 4500x!), but 'Quo' has to be the most perfect album ever and of the 3, has been played more often.... BTW, I don't like the drone either.... my son mimics it hilariously

Time to get back on the recorded stuff again I listened to piledriver and OTL today on my iPod whilst cutting the grass....both cracking albums but piledriver just shades it for me.....I just love Unspoken Words.

The other thing about the early recorded material is that it still has a live feel ie they're all playing together and not recorded separately.
I too have been blown away in recent years by how good those recordings are.

Indeed, and the remasters made the drums more audible to these tired ol' ears, so I found myself just smiling when I heard John on Quo and On The Level...
Then somebody told him to shut up and keep time... sadly.

That is good. And what is missing from later work. I often think it might be okay if recorded differently.

These re-releases with bonus tracks piss me off. I want the album as it was, and as it was supposed to be. Bonus tracks should find another route onto the market
