You know the story - it was Caroline that made me aware of a band called Status Quo all those years ago. And not only Caroline. There was Roll Over Lay Down, a song that gripped me right from the start and has never let me go since. And there was 4500 Times. Magic. I was very much into T. Rex, Sweet and Alice Cooper at the time and trying to find my way in (rock) music. It was great working my way through Quo's older records with all those fantastic songs on. There was so much to hear and see. I was in heaven when I discovered songs like Daughter, April Spring..., Is It Really Me, Mean Girl and the amazing Pictures of Matchstick Men.
It was my own personal dawn in rock music. I realized I had heard most of those songs before, must have seen that band perform on telly before. They were just what I had been looking for. Perfect. And then there was the Quo album followed by On the Level which I consider the peak of my life as a Quo fan. So Hello.

I see we have two BTB entries already - here is a question for you two. When you got into Quo BtB was out, so, when you first heard 1982, did it sound like Quo to you? (it sounded very odd and different to many of us older fans.) I really like NTL/JS/1982 as that's when I got into Quo.

If id have heard the likes of JS/1982 first I don't think id have wanted to listen to any other status quo albums , blindly thinking they where just another dull band I mean .

Early '70s I was very much into Slade. I must have heard Quo regularly on the radio & seen them on TOTP but only really registered them performing Down Down when it hit No. 1. The attraction was cemented by the following Roll Over Lay Down Live EP, Rain & Mystery Song. I really liked Mystery Song. I recall the performance from Bingley Hall on tv. By this time I was hooked. So Blue For You for me. However, the first albums I heard were other peoples copies of Piledriver, On The Level & subsequently Rockin' All Over The World & If You Can't Stand The Heat. I think the first purchases I made would have been the old Pye Best of & Rest of albums & then, I think, Live!, Whatever You Want & Hello! Eventually I got Blue For You & was stunned by the album version of my favourite Quo track: Mystery Song - it was now my joint favourite, with itself!
Maybe it's because I was getting into them as they migrated from the classic era to the less classic era, but I still liked the post-Live! releases. Although by the time John had been replaced & the dreadful shock of them releasing 1+9+8+2 had hit me, I wasn't too sure about bothering to see them again but I was really glad I did.

(it sounded very odd and different to many of us older fans.) I was fortunate to hear a friend's "She Don't Fool Me" single before I even heard BTB, but 1982 sounded even less Quo like than BTB to me, apart from the 2 singles. I remember the confusion well. Add that I had 12GB 1+2 at the same time as BTB. At least BTB seemed packed with hits to my young ears. 1982 was quite a downer in comparison, quite a depressing album melodically and lyrically I think.

NTL. Not that that matters. As far as influence goes, JS because those were the singles out around that time (and I liked them) and BFY because my mate had it and the penny dropped that Quo did albums which might have some great rockers tucked away on them.

They first really registered with me around the time of Hello. I didn't like POMM at all and didn't pay much attention following that. Then family matters intervened after Hello and I reconnected about the time of WYW since when it was intermittent until I started going to gigs with QPQ. Good heavens Granny and I thought I was a case of delayed reaction! (POMM to 1982.)

BFY album, although I wasn't aware of that, as Heep was the rock band I was into at the time. It was the Wild Side Of Life single that made me a Quo fan and then the gig, naturally.

JS for me as an 11 year old. Heard WYP on the radio when it came out and saved up for the album (cassette) quickly after that.
Then picked Piledriver as my first purchase from the back catalogue and could not believe how good it was ! Took a good few years to fill in the gaps and did not buy DOTH or MKGS until a few years ago.....a very pleasant surprise it was too (did not realise how good they were or would have bought much earlier).

Hi All, BFY was the first album I bought second hand at that but I had been listening to earlier albums around my mates house in the early 70's as he had quite a bit of pocket money more than me, he had all their albums so how do I score on that then ?
Geoff.

Geoff. Just think what date you got into them GEoff - and it's the album before that. Funny that we only have 4 people voting as getting into Quo after 1986. Thought we'd have more youngsters than that (ie people born after 1980). I think most of us all came from the older boards... and we're all getting older...
