I can't name a last piledriver. I obviously like a lot of the heavier Quo songs in the peak 70's period, but I've always enjoyed the variety of Quo. So a last piledriver is not huge importance to me.
Hence, for example, the fiskadelic era appeals as well as the heavier boogie era to follow. The former makes the latter possible, and also, I think, all the better for it.
Its a whole story to me - to miss bits out, takes away from the whole, in my opinion. And it also makes each era have, like um, less meaning also
Unlike many fans during the 70's, my enthusiasm didn't wane after BFY. The disappointment with RAOTW and IYCSTH totally passed me by - never gave it a thought really. I enjoyed the albums onward to WYW, JS and NTL. The gigs kept my interest completely alive anyway, and the subtle differences with the albums that emerged from RAOTW were intriguing, looking back. It was 1982 and BTB where I was rather less enthused. Still, even then I kept right on to the End of the Road.
Its easier to choose some of the heavier CQ material, because both their rock and pop music has a much more processed feel to it than the early days and its easier, I find, to more straightforwardly either like or dislike it.
In contrast, the 70's albums (most especially the early to mid 70's) of the peak FF era, its hard to separate the light and shade material. Examples are inexhaustive and subjective to taste of course, but how do you 'preference separate' the likes of, say, A Year or Lonely Man from I Saw The Light or Ring Of A Change?
On that basis alone, I could not choose a former era piledriver.

It's an odd one this...would be a contender for pisstake of the year..but...I saw them give this a real pounding at Greenwich and the crowd loved it. They gave Blue eyed lady and Oh baby a pounding , went down like a lead balloon apparently , depends what crowds theres and what tracks they know . Hi All, piledriver, Your answer can also apply to the individual fan as far as Carls question goes! If I am totally honest they have not produced a real Head Banger,Chug,Chug track since WYW as Carl has suggested. Having said that there have been the odd heavier sounding track, but like yourself and other FF purists do not consider CQ the true Quo sound as far as I can tell by past comments on the Forum.
Myself like I have always maintained I prefer the FF sound but can also listen to the CQ music, like I say a matter of opinion and everybody has one and are varied, at the end of the day you either like or dislike certain tracks.....

Also, 'Movin' On'. You can't get any better than the Frantic Four, But for CQ, there's a few in there, like 'Lucinda' or 'Shine On'.Your talking about a THIRTY YEAR period ! and no one cant hardly mention 4 tracks from the last 3 decades ! . Lets stick to the real band on this topic.
WHAT!? We've got plenty of good rockers over the years! Just a few

Hi All, CL, I have taken these snippets above from your post as this is how I categorise most of Quo's catalogue if not all bands music, down to a simple choice as you said Like or Dislike. At the end of the day it's down to personal choice and if many individuals say your wrong so what it's your own opinion that counts not theirs (You just become billy no mates )
Just like any other choice people make in life all are different, my choice was just one of the CQ crop of output that I personally think that had that sound. I agree with you not a patch on Pledriver but just has that hint of what could become one if they reverted back to the FF sound rather than like you also mentioned the more "Pop & Rock" and "processed feel" .......

They are not exactly Piledriver standard and quality, but I like most of those That is, with the exception of the overrated (in my opinion) Solid Gold.
Rather cringy lounge lizard type lyrics from Rick though spoil Belavista Man!

Not sad that we've got the old material, but sad that they failed to reach those heights again. Arguably even sadder that you view Is It Really Me / Gotta Go Home as the last [& first?] of that ilk.

You got me wrong i love everything up till r.a.o.t.w and some albums after spec w.y.w ect,but the release of the beatclub gotta go home and the original old ff is what the quo was about original hard hitting rock, after b.f.y album thay changed to reach a bigger fan base, still liked the odd album, and the concerts were great but something crept into the band that made them less rock, bad management and drugs ect but at the end of the day it was the band that made the final decisions on what thay wrote released, and most was sorry to say c**p i.y.c.s.t.h. for example no decent single off that album,we all yearn for the good days of quo weve had them,up to you what era you like be it ff or cq we all have our favourites,im old school from the 60s to 70s my era !
