...how would you have recieved it?
From the opening bars of the opening track, I felt deflated as the sound from RTYD and AW had been scrubbed clean. That wouldn't have happened without the Quo name.
As a solo album, for me it's far better than Francis releases. I think I would have welcomed this as a solo release. Overall I think the quality of the material is better than Perfect Remedy and TPAOY, and perhaps a few others.

I always thought this was more suited to a FR solo album. The sound & song writing was all FR. I don’t think Rick plugged his guitar in on Thirsty Work & probably wasn’t there in the studio half the time. After RTYD 3 years previous, it was a disappointment overall. Far to polished & melodic by Quo standards. I wanted more RTYD style & production. Strange thing is Rossi produced RTYD. For me things studio wise didn’t improve until Under the influence. The Thirsty work tour was decent, new & bigger rig, set list & tour merchandise were good. Unfortunately the album didn’t cut it & sales were dropping around this period.

I wouldn't have liked Thirsty Work any more than I did (which was not much at all really), although I may have viewed it differently had it been a solo album.
Although the album deserves the panning that it gets, it suffered even more so because the release before it was the best they'd done in an eon.
It raises an interesting question, which I'd never thought of before. Which do I prefer, Thirsty Work or King of the Doghouse? I'm genuinely not sure. It wasn't a great time to be a Quo fan. Not for studio releases anyway.
You know what? The best thing to come out of the Quo camp after Rock 'til You Drop was Rhino's Revenge. It was streets ahead of anything for over 10 years until Heavy Traffic. After that, for me, they were back on track. Not the Quo of the 70's but probably the best and most consistent since the 70's.
Every act of Quo's vintage will have a turkey or two in them. Be weird if they didn't.

I suppose we could adapt that idea on quite a few Quo album's, had they been a Francis solo album would we look at it with more empathy?
I think B2B minus No Contract could have been close to a Francis Rossi solo album, and Marguerita Time is definitely more suited as a Francis solo single. And I could easily imagine Francis singing Your kind of love instead of Alan.
But lets turn this topic upside down for a minute, what if Francis's solo album's we're Quo album's?
Its not impossible to imagine tracks like Faded Memory, Where are we now, Darlin', Sleeping on the job, even Modern Romance and a few others as Quo songs.
Imagine had King of the doghouse album was released as a Quo album? Would it have been a hit?

Well, it wouldn't have been received at all. Rossi's solo material has no audience and is certainly not commercially viable. Us Quo fans would have showed a mild interest due to the name and connection to the band, but otherwise, Thirsty Work would have bombed more than it actually did under the Quo banner. At the end of the day the music itself is just too sub standard. I fail to see how Rossi believes in it so much when the output is so mediocre and bland.

I have mentioned this before in other threads, but its worth mentioning again perhaps.
My local pub had in 1994 Thirsty Work as a new album on the jukebox, and I have to say it was very well recieved at the time.
Back then I used to go out all three nights at the weekend, I was in a darts team on Friday nights, Saturdays was just a piss up, and I was in a pool team on Sunday evenings, so I could gauge what was being played on the jukebox.
And I have to say Thirsty Work as an album had its own fans. Whether they we're Quo fans exactly is another question.
Firm favourites were The point of no return, that was probably the most played song.
Others were Lover of the human race, Sherri don't fail me now, Goin nowhere. Occasionally Restless.
To think it wouldn't have even seen the light of day probably as a Francis solo album in the same respect.

It was great times, but since then the pub has changed hands a few times, its not the same and I gave up going in there over 10 years ago. It was pool not snooker.
