It is a kind of song that was commercially quite popular around that time the big power ballad approach and we had bands like Heart,Berlin and Bryan Adams having hits with this type of song. Quo decided to release a similar song in “who gets the love” which wasn’t a big hit so maybe it wouldn’t have done any better. Maybe the writers kicked themselves a bit giving it to Quo as if it had been given to another act as above it could have been a smash hit. Phil collins probably would have done a good version or Rod Stewart etc..

It was actually my favourite song on the album for a while. Which I suppose speaks volumes for the album But I do still quite like it. Quo tend to record ballads that aren't really my cup of tea. They're usually a bit schmaltzy. Syrupy, even. But this one has a better melody to it. For me anyway. It's a little less predictable. I doubt it would have been a successful single in the UK. Almost every 'ballad' they've brought out as a single hasn't been. Unless you include In The Army Now in that mould. I don't think this one charted in France. I don't see it as a power ballad, if I'm honest. It's not something Quo could ever do. No one had the voice for it. Thankfully! I'm old enough to remember when Heart were a half decent rock band. Before they succumbed to the Mother's Day compilation market.

I just can't help but think if Rick sang it or they were given to someone else, they'd have been bigger. Nowt against Francis, he just doesn't have the delivery for these type of songs That said, I like them and at least with that album, they tried something different. As opposed to bog standard country stuff

I mean, it sounds absolutely nothing like 'Status Quo'. But I guess that was the point. "We're taking the band in a new direction".

The song is actually very good a nice music change into the bit where it goes into the middle eight with Rick singing. Not many songs with a Rossi/parfitt shared vocals like that. If Quo had broken the American market this type of song probably would have done quite well via rock radio. Many type of act similar to Quo had gone down this route when originally starting out rock n roll. We had Foreigner- I want to know what love is, Bryan Adams- Heaven Queen- who wants to live forever.for example which were slightly different to what they usually did. For some reason the breaking heart ballad didn’t pay off for them. I have always been pro diversity in music and with In the army for example they went slightly off the beaten track and it worked with a moody half paced pop/rock song. I am not sure whether the band just took the lyrics by the outside writers or an original exists somewhere however obscure like Dear John I agree it is too high in key for Francis’s voice and maybe Rick should have sang the whole thing??

I personally like the song, and the album.
But even if you dislike the song, you can clearly hear that it is a very definite attempt to record a hit single. An attempt to appeal to the market that enjoys a power ballad.
So it does make me wonder why they didn't release it as a single, or do any sort of promotion for it. I mean is there any point in having an overtly commercial tune hidden away on an album, where the only people that will hear it are your fans who've already bought said album.
So yes, for me, a strange decision to record an overtly commercial track, and then not try and push it. Particularly after Burning Bridges was a big top ten hit for them. Surely when you have a big hit, you want to follow it up, and if you have your song recorded to appeal to the mass populous, then go for it ...

Yes agree it is strange they went for a big number outside writer song and left it tucked away as an album track only the ardent fans who bought Ain’t complaining. Maybe they thought they could improve on it by doing “who gets the love” which was more in sync with their vocal range???

This was a song that was political in that there was record company pressure on them to record it apparently.
Why that should be isn’t quite clear given it was only released in France

The bass sound and style screams mid 80s. Reminds me of the Labyrinth soundtrack for some reason
