MS is a rock monster. I think it has far less melody than the hits that preceded it
I can see that Caroline,PP or break the rules also work as pop songs. I don't see that with MS
I do think mad about the boy hints at the poppiness to come. Apart from Dog, there's pop melody on all the albums.

Love Mystery Song, it's a Quo colossus in my opinion. I've never really considered it overly poppy, but always thought it was catchy as hell, which gives you that more commercial opportunity I suppose, it was a perfect choice for a single, it's got pretty much everything you'd want from a Quo single of any era.
I agree with what MrWaistcoat says above, in that all Quo's albums have had some kind of pop melody going on somewhere.
To me, regards Quo, it's less to do with whether it's pop or not, but whether the song is good, is the melody good and does it sound good ie full guitars bass drums etc. That's I think is what has irked some over the years is when they have strayed from being a full bodied guitar band on record, quality of tunes yes, but some fairly decent tunes have been weakened through a watered down more plastic Quo sound.
Sweet Child o' Mine is a great example in my opinion of a solid rock song that sounds like a rock song, but has that commercial radio friendly appeal too. I think you can say the same about most of Quo's 70's singles.
You'll Come Round would be another good Quo example.

Mystery Song "starting to sound commercial and poppy...". I don't think so! I definitely don't think so. In fact, I certainly don't think so. So, I don't think so. Can I be any more clearer than that!!! Along with Rain, one of Quo's heaviest tracks that's not on the Quo album. Put your airpods/headphones on and listen again, and again and again (no pun intended). This ain't no pop song... this is a rock song!!

Mystery song is one of the greats. I didn’t like it when I was a kid and conveniently on 12 gold bars cassette if you flipped over right after again and again it cut the whole song out perfectly
Ah the naivety of youth.

Can't say I agree but we all hear different things. At the time, I thought Mystery Song was proper rock; and modern. The full length version that is. It was going down that I'm Mandy Fly Me/Bohemian Rhapsody route of having various segments and bordering on being called an 'opus'. Unfortunately, unlike these other two, the record company decided on an edited version for radio. The other two got to no.1. I rest my case Can you imagine a full length Mystery Song being the first single off the album? Doesn't matter how much of it, if any, the radio played. It would have been a huge hit.

No doubt in my mind that this song should’ve been the one that the record company should’ve got behind to launch Quo into America. With Ricks good looks and him belting out this song it was a natural for the market. Quo had reached great heights in UK , parts of Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and parts of Asia with number 1 albums and singles. I still can’t fathom how the mostly worldwide popularity fell short in America apart from naive management through lack of record and media contacts.

To my ears Mystery Song is full throttle rock! Yes it has a catchy melody but listen how they play it, for example Spud is on fire here! So no this one definitly belongs to the ”before the rut/pop era”, a true FF rocker!

As said above we all hear different things...if I hear any pop/commercial on BFY then it would maybe be on Ease Your Mind but definitely not on Mystery song.

Probably because the sound was tight, the playing was tidier and better and the production was more "clean" when compared to Paper Plane, Caroline, BTR, Mean Girl etc
They were producing themselves so they obviously gained more experience and knowledge. Their playing was obviously going to get better and tighter
Probably those elements contribute to your way of thinking with it.
But it is a rock song, with pop elements. Like all Quo songs. Even Alan's songs. Which is why Francis saying Alan hated the singles as they weren't manly enough will always be a pile of shite to me, going by his contributions to Rain, Mystery Song and him writing/co writing Blue For You, A Year, Lonely Man, Blue Eyed Lady, All The Reasons etc

For me the ultimate Quo-rocksong (the BFY-version that is). But with that little pinch of poppiness in it, i understand Roadhouse's feelings.

Don't get me wrong I do think Mystery Song is an awesome piece of work. I just feel or can hear a pop song in there some how. Obviously it rocks, but theres a pinch of pop to it in my ears. Still a great track though.

Still a great track though. That's the way with a lot of Quo songs of that era. They're rock songs, with elements of pop. It's what I agree with Francis on. Quo have the rock edge sound with pop melodies. The only ones I can think of, off the top of my head that don't, would be possibly Nightride and Drifting Away. But even then it's a stretch. Drifting Away is just sang out of tune at times

I don't care if it's pop, rock, folk or reggae, it's one of the greatest songs of all time! My love for it was honed in the discos of my north eastern ex-pit town home where, when the dj played it, we all raced onto the floor, leapt 13 feet into the air and slid on our knees into a perfect circle and headbanged until it finished! The only way it culd possibly have gotten better would be if they put a video out with Rick in full blond rock star mode - open shirt, blond hair blowing in the wind (ok, a fan) doing what Rick does. And they DID!!!!!
I don't care what else Francis has ever done, and of course, kids, you should never take drugs, ahem, but thank goodness he stirred that speed into Rick's cup of tea that evening!
