Eike Freese in his Chameleon Studio, Hamburg. He‘s working very close with earMUSIC in Hamburg and mixed stuff for Deep Purple, Thunder, Alice Cooper, Saga, The New Model Army, Simple Minds and lots more.

My problem with him is always the same - he mixes (or masters) hard rock to sound like metal, which doesn't work. Too much compression. The Saga live album So Good So Far is a good example. Saga need a slightly more relaxed sound, not drums gunning down the rest of the music. I actually enjoyed his mixes on the Backbone bonus disc, and think they sound much better than anything that Paxman did, but the mastering partially undoes all that.

Rockin' All Over The World, from the London O2 shoe, is on Spotify now

The chances of me actually listening to these archive releases are fairly slim. Apart from Westonbirt and the first Pictures live releases, I'm not sure I listened to them that much before. I just picked at songs that were rarely in the set or were new. Otherwise, they were more or less all very similar because of the static set list, particularly for the second half of each gig. So I'd get over which channel each guitar was coming out of quite quickly The previous vinyl release was beautifully packaged and the new ones look to have been given similar treatment. They might all cover the same ground but they look nice on the shelf

Completists at worst. Collectors from a very young age. By default really. Once you've grabbed stuff for 4 or 5 years, you suddenly realise you want more. Becomes a sort of hobby over and above the actual music. Completism is a tricky one and is likely to result in mental health issues But I agree we're somewhere between those two stools. Can I say stools?

The 'Official Archive Series' continues!
‘Vol. 2 - Live In London’ was a hometown show recorded on 19 December 2012 on the band’s ‘Quo Festive’ tour. The setlist at the O2 Arena saw the line-up of Francis Rossi, Rick Parfitt, Andrew Bown, John ‘Rhino’ Edwards and Matt Letley [in his last UK show as Quo drummer] deliver an avalanche of classics, and even features a Christmas Medley, including “Walking In A Winter Wonderland”, “Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree” and Quo’s own “It's Christmas Time”.
Available as strictly limited and numbered CD, vinyl editions and also t-shirt/poster bundle options, as well as on digital formats, the series offers exceptional sound quality and great packaging, featuring photography by Christie Goodwin. ‘Status Quo – Official Archive Series’ has been freshly mixed and mastered by Eike Freese and Laurin Halberstadt at Chameleon Studios Hamburg.
This band certainly has left an indelible mark in the world of Rock ‘N’ Roll. Since their foundation in 1962, Status Quo established their distinctive boogie rock style that became their trademark. Over all this years, original members Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt, along with an ensemble of talented musicians, formed this institution called Status Quo, that has built a worldwide dedicated fan base and achieved remarkable success. Status Quo's energetic live performances became their calling card, with their trademark boogie rock anthems igniting crowds around the world. They have played countless sold-out shows, headlined major festivals, and built a reputation as a must-see live act.

The "new 2023 mix" of The Christmas Medley" should be interesting. Apart from maybe the shock of Restless being played back in the day, this was easily the most bizarre experience I've had at a Quo gig. It was, in all honesty, pretty bl00dy awful. It seemed very under rehearsed and thrown together with an admittedly professionally enthusiastic Kim Wilde joining in along with a baffled looking Roy Wood That's the funny thing about 50-odd years of Quo gigs. Certain things stand out. And not necessarily in a good way

I was right under Rick, so to speak, and it got to that medley and they're all over the place. I pointed to the teleprompter Rick was using and he just shrugged, made an 'I know' expression and shook his head. I'm sure it was that gig. Let's remind ourselves as we head towards the festive season. In the words of Andy Bown 'It was shit'. Not sure what venue this was.

4th Chord, I think my yuletide experience was at Cardiff CIA. I was living in Wales at the time. The guy that wrote Any Way You Like It (on the Quid Pro Quo album), Alan Crook, was just behind us and he and Rhino were trying to say something to each other before they started the encore. Rhino laughed and shouted out something like " wait till you see this..!" As far as I'm aware, they never repeated the 'medley'. Maybe if they'd actually rehearsed it for the next winter tour to get it polished up a bit, it might have been better. But I doubt it

That was the year two days before the tour Rick had a heart attack, had a stent fitted the next day then played Birmingham NEC the day after that. Once armed with that knowledge, we could allow them a little slack for it feeling a bit underehearsed. I have to say though, it’s a guilty Quo pleasure of mine. I enjoyed it in the run up to Christmas. Happy memories for me😊👍

The memories are all becoming blurry with age.....
