Mick Jones, lead guitarist and occasional lead vocalist with The Clash, was born on 26th June 1955, making him 67 today. The band seldom did TV shows, which made me miss out on them as I loved punk bands in the day, but here they are (with Mick taking lead vocal on the first of two songs) on a Tyne Tees programme called 'Alright Now' in 1979.

Introduced by your fellow countryman, Den Hegarty of Darts! I don't remember that prog "Alright Now". We didn't get all the ITV programmes in Scotland so missed out on quite a few music ones in particular. I only saw The Clash once; in early 1977. I wasn't sure what punk was all about so went along to see what all the fuss was I picked a good one. They were supported by The Jam and The Buzzcocks among others. It was like one of those old NME/record label tours from the 60's with all the acts on it being given some limelight. Very small crowd. But, as we all know, that would change somewhat

A dearth of birthdays today, just Bruce Johnson, singer with the Beach Boys, of notable interest (80 today). Which is why I'm going a bit leftfield and am nominating Gilson Lavis, one-time drummer with UK band Squeeze. He's 71 today. He currently is with the Jules Holland band, who he knew when both played with Squeeze! Anyway, a good excuse to pick Mr Lavis, as I can play this cracker from 1978. It's Squeeze's first single and has always been a favourite of mine.

Ian Paice, born in Nottingham on 29th June 1948, is 74 today. He helped form Deep Purple in 1968, left them in '76 when they split up, spent the next six years with Paice Ashton Lord & Whitesnake, before joining the Gary Moore band for a couple of years in 1982. He returned to Deep Purple when they reformed in 1984 and has been with them ever since. Here he is with Gary Moore in 1982. Two guys at the very top of their game!

Every day's a school day 👍

Another of the '49ers - Andy Scott, born in Wrexham on the 30th June 1949, is 73 today. He joined The Sweet in 1970 (from 1974, just Sweet) as lead/rhythm guitarist, and at present is the sole surviving member of the band. The clip is them playing on German tv in early '74, when they were beginning to break away from the Chinn/Chapman bubblegum music to a more hard-rock sound. The song 'Sweet F A' is an album track off their 1974 'Sweet Fanny Adams' LP. (Not sure of this is live or singing over a backing track)

Unbelievably, Angela Trimble, born on 1st July 1945, is 77 today! Who am I talking about? Well it's Debbie Harry, and amazingly she had reached the grand old age of 33 when Blondie had their first UK hit with 'Denis' in 1978. Here she is in some rare footage, three years earlier, with Blondie in rock club CBGB's in New York.

Paul Williams was born on 2nd July 1939 in Birmingham, Alabama. In 1961, after moving to Detroit, he was one of the founding members of what would become The Temptations, a group that would be one of the best-known soul/vocal groups in the US. Paul was the group's lead singer, particularly in the group's early years, but health and addiction issues came to dominate his life and he was out of the band by 1971. Sadly, he took his own life two years later, aged only 34. Here he is in 1967, doing lead vocal on 'Don't Look Back'. He had a fantastic voice.

Judith Durham, lead singer with Australian group 'The Seekers' was born on 3rd July 1943 and is therefore 79 today. Most of the band's hits were written by Tom Springfield, whose sister was.... Dusty Springfield. In early 1965, The Seekers became the first Australian band to top the UK charts with the track, I'll Never Find Another You'.

I think Dusty started with her brother when they called themselves The Springfields. That was way back though. Well before my time. I presume he went to Australia and she went solo. Just a guess though. The Seekers were very popular in the UK for a while. They were perfect for light entertainment as well. Nice and wholesome

Bill Withers was born in West Virginia on 4th July 'Independence Day' 1938. He passed away two years ago. He wrote a couple of classic songs, 'Lovely Day', 'Ain't No Sunshine', and this one from 1972.

Meant to mention the other day, quodec. I've got a Squeeze single called Cat On A Wall from something called the Packet of 3 EP. Can't remember much about it except I really liked it at the time. I think it came out before they hit the big time but I wouldn't swear to it. Your post about Gilson Lavis reminded me about it and encouraged me to dig it out. I'd forgotten all about it! 👍

For your delectation, here's Cat on a Wall. Great intro!

I did that a lot - and was disappointed a lot! But the review said something along the lines of, if you like Status Quo you'll probably like this. Nothing like Quo of course but I did like it. Still do. Ta for that
