A couple of belters for me here Although I didn't know who he was at the time (I was only about 12) Ritchie Blackmore made me sit up and take notice of rock music. Music in general really. So, almost single-handedly, he set me on my way. I had the single Black Night (one of my first) and borrowed the In Rock album from a schoolmate. The solo in Child In Time completely blew me away and I have tended to focus largely on rock guitarists ever since, even judging bands on how much I liked the lead guitarist. I was lucky enough to see Ritchie in his pomp both with Deep Purple in 1974 and with Rainbow in '76, '80 and '81. Still a favourite of mine and, although I'm no musician, he always seemed to me such a superb technician. Phil Mogg fronted one of my all time favourite bands. I've seen UFO numerous times, although only the once with another hero of mine, Michael Schenker. They also gave me one of the greatest albums I will ever hear in The Wild, the Willing and the Innocent. Phil Mogg only recently retired but I managed to catch the band one last time in 2016. He and the drummer Andy Parker are almost the last men standing with Paul Chapman, Paul Raymond and Pete Way all having left this mortal coil. Michael Schenker continues to perform and record though. I've never seen that video for Only You Can Rock Me before. Great stuff 👍 Dave Edmunds I've sort of picked at on and off over the years. I remember a cousin had the Love Sculpture single, Sabre Dance a very long time ago and then, of course, along came I Hear You Knocking and a star was born. His brief renaissance in the late 70's early 80's owed much to his rock and roll heritage. I think John David, who has written many a Quo track, played in one of Edmunds' bands and of course he produced two Quo singles in 1986. A good couple of days for birthdays. Well, I think so

Can't find any half decent footage of UFO playing one of my all time favourite tracks so the studio version will have to do. This is Long Gone and I still love it. The strings at the end are a touch of class. The whole album still gets an airing chez Mortified to this day

Another one hugely admired by me; Gerry Rafferty.
I can honestly say he's the only artist I'd listen to just for his voice. Ordinarily, it's the music for me every time and a good singer is a bonus.
A great friend of (Sir) Billy Connolly's of course, certainly in the early days. And he has produced so many great albums, most of which have been fairly unsuccessful commercially. But he made that much money from Baker Street and the City To City album, it set him up for life. It also played with his sanity and he turned to alcohol, which eventually took him from us. He apparently hated the fame and the pressure to continually produce.
Personal favourite album is Snakes And Ladders and this track in particular. He had a voice like velvet.

Peter McNeish was born in Lancashire on 17th April 1955 and became a successful singer/songwriter with the punk group Buzzcocks as Pete Shelley (after the poet). He was involved in nine studio albums plus numerous singles with the band, but this 1978 song is the one he will be mainly remembered for. Pete passed away in 2018 at the age of 63.

It was quite a shock when Pete Shelley passed. He just didn't seem that old. And I guess he wasn't. That video makes me chuckle, although I know that's not the intention. I keep seeing and hearing Rik Mayall in Pete Shelley's expressions and delivery Right down to that slight speech impediment. I was never a big Buzzcocks fan but I did catch them live once as part of a sort of punk tour package with The Clash, The Jam, Subway Sect and The Slits. 3 out of the 5 went on to much bigger things. Not a bad ratio 👍

James Newell Osterberg Jr. was born in Michigan on 21st April 1947 and is 76 today. Known professionally as Iggy Pop, he is a singer, musician, radio broadcaster, songwriter and actor. Called the "Godfather of Punk", he was the vocalist and lyricist of US band The Stooges, who were formed in 1967 and have disbanded and reunited many times since. Iggy Pop's music has encompassed a number of styles over the course of his career, including garage rock, punk rock, hard rock, heavy metal, art rock, new wave, grunge, jazz, blues and electronic. Though his popularity has ebbed and flowed, many of his songs have become well-known, including "Search and Destroy" and "I Wanna Be Your Dog" by the Stooges, and his solo hits "Lust for Life", "The Passenger" and "Real Wild Child (Wild One)". He also co-wrote "China Girl" with David Bowie. Here he is, at his idiosyncratic best, in 1977 with The Passenger.

Always kept one eye on Iggy Pop although I've only got one of his albums, from much more recently admittedly; Post Pop Depression from about half a dozen years ago. Still got the 12" of Real Wild Child kicking about somewhere.
I've seen him interviewed a couple of times and he's a more fun character than he looks. He and Bowie were great mates.
I think he may have recorded China Girl first, although I'd have to check that. I've certainly heard his version of it.

Roy Orbison was born in Texas on 23rd April 1936 and died in 1988. Though Sam Phillips signed him to Sun Records in 1956, he made his musical mark with a series of fine tracks on Monument Records, songs such as "Only the Lonely" (1960), "Running Scared" (1961), "Crying" (1961), "In Dreams" (1963), and "Oh, Pretty Woman" (1964). Following a series of tragedies and career decline, he regained his mojo by co-founding The Travelling Wilburys in 1988 alongside George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty & Jeff Lynne. But just as fortune smiled on him again with the release of their first album, he died suddenly in Tennessee, aged just 52. Here is one of his most iconic songs, played live in 1985. It's a song, whose fantastic intro, still gives me goose-bumps to this day.

Never a fan of Roy Orbison but always aware of him from an early age because of Oh, Pretty Woman which was no.1 when I was a kid. Van Halen did a great cover of it as well.
I saw a documentary about him on BBC 4 not that long ago. Some good footage of him on the road. He was a chain smoker and the suggestion was that this contributed to his early demise. But he did go out on a high with The Travelling Wilburys.
Unique, almost falsetto voice. Always recognisable.

Singer Tony Christie ('Is this the Way to Amarillo?') was born on 25th April 1943 and is 80 today.
Bjorn Ulvaeus of ABBA fame is 78 today.
Derek William Dick, aka Fish, one time singer with Marillion, is 65 today.
Andy Bell of Erasure was born on 25th April 1964 and celebrates his 59th birthday today.
Creedence Clearwater Revival's rhythm section, drummer Doug Clifford and bassist Stu Cook have birthdays just one day apart, with Stu born on the 25th April 1945 and Doug the previous day, the 24th. So, what a good excuse to play a classic CCR track when at their peak in 1969.

Quite a selection. My mum really liked Tony Christie and there were a couple of CCR singles in the family collection; the predictable Bad Moon Rising and one called Travellin' Band. Two faves of mine in there in Andy Bell (well, Erasure) and Fish. The latter as a solo artist. Wasn't keen on the Marillion days if I'm honest. I loved Erasure. They did about a fortnight at quite a large venue in Edinburgh back in the early 90's (a 4,000 seater) which means they played to pretty much the equivalent of the total population of the city! The gig I went to was excellent. The highlight was an ABBA tribute (happy birthday, Bjorn ) with the two of them dressed as Anni-Frid and Agnetha. Fish supported Quo at a gig up here in 2003 and he was excellent. Went down a storm. I think I'll stick up a recent song of his that I like. Just coz I like it Nice groove running through it and lyrically excellent.

Ok, we only have a week or so to go on the Born on this Day thread, so I'm gonna go rogue on a few of the entries - like this one. Rick Driscoll (born on 1st May 1957) was the lead singer with a band called Chuff in 1974, when Mickie Most drafted the band in to cover songs which Bill Martin & Phil Coulter were writing in a Bay City Roller/Chinn Chapman style. The result was the band Kenny and several 1974/75 hits followed, such as The Bump, Fancy Pants, Julie Anne, and this one, which rather impressed me as a late Glam Rock fan at the time.
p.s. Apparently Rick is currently hiring out yachts in Corfu!

I remember Kenny. My sister liked them as a kid (and all that bubblegum glam stuff 'til I took her to see Quo ). She played The Bump until the grooves disappeared. In fact, she seemed to go for anything that came out on the Bell or RAK labels! Takes me back watching that video though 👍

Lou Gramm's vocals played a big part of the sound of rock 'n' roll radio in the late 70s and early to mid 80s, both here and in the US. He was born on 2nd May 1950 in New York and became the lead singer with Foreigner in 1977. Their first five albums all spawned big hit singles, such as Cold as Ice, Hot Blooded, Urgent, Juke Box Hero etc. But then along came the big power ballads, Waiting for a Girl like You in 1981 and 1984's I Want to Know what Love Is, and Gramm's voice, great though it was, began to lose its appeal to me. So, back to their rockers, and before they went all schmaltzy on us, here's a 1979 No 12 US hit (didn't chart in the UK), called Dirty White Boy, which I rather like.
