Singer Steven Tyler was born in New York on 26th March 1948 and his 75th birthday is today. He and Joe Perry founded Aerosmith in 1970 and released their first eponymous album three years later. They became huge in America shortly afterwards, going on to have numerous Top 10 albums and singles in the charts. However, like some of their US musical peers, they were not as successful on this side of the world. Personally, they never were strong on my radar and a greatest hits CD I have rarely gets played. Maybe I should give it another spin.
Plenty of big hits to pick from, but here's a live version of an 1985 single release, 'Let the Music do the Talking', which I rather enjoy.

That's a cracking Aerosmith track. I've always loved Joe Perry's fretwork. Never perfect, usually rough but still gets the hair on my neck standing up. I think my first encounter with Aerosmith was in buying the Rocks album way back. Don't think I was long out of school. But like most Aerosmith albums, I loved about half of it and couldn't be bothered with the rest. It was always black and white with Aerosmith for me. I detested that big ballad thing they did for that meteor disaster movie. Mind you, I have no time for big ballads of any sort to be fair It's quite odd they didn't meet with the same level of success over here, although they were reasonably successful. I always thought they had a more British rock sound than an American one. A sort of heavier Rolling Stones. They had that looseness about them. I don't think they toured all that often over here. Sis had tickets to see them years ago; probably the 80's, not sure. But they cancelled. So she never did get to see them. I do have a Steve Tyler solo album he brought out a few years ago called We're All Somebody From Somewhere. But like Aerosmith, about half of it is great. This is my favourite Aerosmith track. A cover of Peter Green's song. Joe Perry on vocals. I know its Mr Tyler's birthday but what the hell It's fabulous.

Sally Carr, lead singer with early 70s Scottish band Middle of the Road is 78 today. They had a couple of hits in 1971, including Chirpy Chirpy...., but I like this one better. Happy birthday Sally.
And Lady Gaga is 37 today. No, I didn't know her real name either! It happens to be Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, so there! She released her first album in 2008 and this was the second No 1 single from it. Very catchy.

I actually remember Soley Soley quite well. My mum bought that single. Still kicking about somewhere in my dad's flat no doubt. Can't say I was ever a fan. They were sort of up there with the likes of Chicory Tip in my own personal hall of fame As for Lady Gaga, she was huge (metaphorically speaking of course) for about half an hour. No doubt still popular but I couldn't really say. She turned to acting, pretty successfully as it happens. I last saw her in "American Horror Story". A particularly nasty one at that! But "A Star Is Born" was what gave her real success in that medium. Very good voice though. I think she guested with the Stones on stage once. I guess a sort of new millennium Madonna if we want to draw a vague comparison.

Thought I'd chuck these up for Mr Bown's birthday yesterday. 76 years young. And young he was when he recorded these. As was I! He's barely recognisable in the first one

There is a video somewhere of him performing the song with Chris Spedding and his trademark Flying-V, so it could be him. But that's just a guess really.

I half expected cavorting nuns to appear with Robert Powell singing Jesus Christ Superstar

A big shout out to one of our own, Matt Letley, who celebrates his 62nd birthday today.
Here he is with the band in Mexico in 2003, working that beat on 'Rain'. Have a good one Matt!

Eric Clapton was born in Ripley, Surrey on 30th March 1945 and is 78 today. How to pick a track from his long and varied career? Well, the following clip was originally a 1978 B-side but was subsequently re-released as a live single along with Cocaine in 1980. I'm not a particular fan of Clapton but I do like his version of Tulsa Time.
