Lots of birthdays today, the 18th December! Lets do youngest to the oldest in that order - you'll see!!
Billie Eilish is 21 today, while Christine Aguilera is 42. Robson Green is 58 while Elliot Easton, The Cars lead guitarist is 69. Bill Nelson of Be-Bop Deluxe fame is 74. However the grand-daddy of them all (not literally!) - and still alive - is..... Keith Richards, who turns a very respectable 79 today! Born in Dartford, Kent in 1943, he got to know Mick Jagger from school days and met him again by chance at a train station in 1962, with Keith taking an immediate interest in the Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters records Mick was carrying. Several months later and the band were up and running - and the rest we all know. He's one of the few original rockers still left and these guys really should be cherished, while still around. I got to see the band twice, the first time in '82, when I was into Quo and AC/DC and heavy rock. It was a big outdoor gig, the band were kind of remote on the stage and, as a 21 year old, I thought they were rather passe, but the second time was in 2003, I was older and more appreciative. It was an indoor show, they were brilliant, the crowd were mad for them and it was a hell of a gig. Good memories!
Keith sang his song 'Happy' at the 2003 gig I was at. It's from the 1972 Exile on Main Street album.
p.s. A close friend of Keith, who played on many of the Stones records, saxophonist Bobby Keys was the exact same age as Keith, born on 18th December 1943. He died in 2014.

Billie Eilish, I think, is an astonishing talent. And I hope she goes on to realise how good she is and becomes as influential as someone like, say, Bowie. But I suspect in today's entirely different world, that's unlikely. Bill Nelson, the last time I saw him, looked cool as anything in a studio with a grey goatee and a beanie hat. He has worn particularly well. A guitarist of some distinction back in the 70's, fawned over by the music press. But he was/is so much more. I remember he released a very cheap album back in the early 80's (83, maybe?) called Chimera. It was on sale for about £1 or something. I had been a fan of Be Bop Deluxe so I bought it. It was completely different and almost experimental but I loved it. Still do. As for Keef, what is there left to be said? Always the real brains behind the Stones' music in my opinion and although he looks scary, the man is a gentleman and said to be painfully shy. Hence the drink and drugs to get him through that lifestyle. Best live album ever for me is probably Get Yer Ya Ya's Out. Didn't get to see the Stones until 1999 (at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh) but, like you quodec , the real highlight was an indoor gig at Glasgow's SECC in 2003. It demonstrated just how good this band were. Have a good one, Mr Richards 🍷

Graham Anthony Barnes was born in Nottingham on 19th December 1944. He began playing guitar at 13 and helped form the band Ten Years after in 1966. He also changed his name to Alvin Lee around this time. TYA released their first album a year later, with Alvin involved in the band up to 1975 (He briefly re-joined for another album in 1989). Going solo, he went on to release a dozen albums in the following decades. He sadly passed away in Spain in 2013. Here is a cracking clip of Alvin in action from 1975, with one of his compositions from the 1972 album 'Rock and Roll Music to the World'.

My first recollection of Ten Years After was the single, Love Like A Man, which I think was something of a surprise hit. It was just as I was beginning to listen to music as a youngster and one of my cousins played it to me. The album Cricklewood Green also did the rounds at school. Other than that, my appreciation of TYA is quite limited. But that's a good clip. Not surprised he changed his name to something more cool and bluesy though. Graham Barnes sounds like the ex-manager of Shrewsbury Town or something

Chris Robinson, lead singer with The Black Crowes, is 56 today. Singer/songwriter Billy Bragg is 65 today. Alan Parsons, singer/songwriter and music producer, is 74 today.
Vocalist Steve Wright, born in Leeds on 20th December 1947 and who died in Australia in 2015, would have been 75 today. His family moved to Australia in the mid 50s, like the emigration route taken by the Young and the Scott families. He became interested in music and ended up as lead singer with The Easybeats from 1964 to 1969, with 'Friday on my Mind' their big international hit in 1966/67. After The Easybeats dissolved at the end of the 60s, Steve went solo and had his former bandmates Harry Vanda and George Young produce a couple of his albums. They also wrote many of the tracks, including this one from his 1975 album of the same name. Interestingly, Rose Tattoo covered the song some 30 years later.
p.s. I believe George Young, elder brother of Malcolm & Angus is on rhythm/lead guitar in this track.

Frank Zappa was born in Baltimore, Maryland on 21st December 1940. Of Italian ancestry, he became a self-taught musician, performer and prolific recording artist, releasing an amazing 62 albums from 1966 until his death in 1993, with another 57 issued by the family since then. A biographer summed up his artistry succinctly: "His work is characterized by nonconformity, free-form improvisation, sound experiments, musical virtuosity and satire of American culture." Frank's backing band, 'The Mothers of Invention', featuring a host of musicians over the years, recorded and gigged with him up until 1975.
This track 'Montana' is from his 1973 album 'Over-Nite Sensation'.

Two artists I know very little about. In fact, in Steve Wright's case absolutely nothing, although that Easybeats single is obviously very well known. So it's interesting to read some background on him. The Vanda & Young connection keeps popping up. Frank Zappa I never really listened to. I remember Hot Rats doing the rounds at school but I'm pretty sure I never borrowed it. I saw a documentary on Zappa not that long ago and he seemed a smart man, even dabbling in politics at one point. I think probably just to pi$$ people off

Thanks for remembering FZ, my biggest musical hero - by a large distance, too. There’s something for (literally) everybody in his HUGE body of work but I think most folks just don’t bother trying to find it.
“…music is the best” (FZ: ‘Joe’s Garage’)

The late Bee Gee twins Maurice and Robin Gibb were born on 22nd December 1949, with Maurice passing in 2003 and Robin in 2012.
Rick Neilsen, lead guitarist, backing vocalist and chief songwriter for US band Cheap Trick, is 76 today. Born in Illinois and known for his somewhat manic stage performance, his power pop licks and riffs have filled 20 studio albums since 1977. Apart from being a one hit wonder on this side of the pond with 'I Want You to Want Me' in the late 70s, I don't think they translated well in Europe (big in Japan though!) and they never really had the melodies to make me listen out for them.
This live double track 'Just Got Back'/Clock Strikes Ten', features Rick wearing the black baseball hat.

Never a Bee Gees fan, although I could appreciate their popularity. I do have one Bee Gees single - You Should Be Dancing - because I liked it for some reason. They were just in the process of beginning to exploit the disco market and it was after Jive Talkin' (I think). World domination was just round the corner. Cheap Trick I've always had a soft spot for. As you say, they never quite made proper inroads in the UK apart from that one live hit single. Which I have on, not controversially in those days, Japanese yellow vinyl because it was recorded at the Budokan. I did see them live in 1979 at a small club in Edinburgh but it's a distant memory. However, I have bought two recent albums; 2016's Bang, Zoom, Crazy....Hello and the follow up, We're Alright. The first of those two is terrific. However, as a way of celebrating the season, get a load of their cover of this. Always the best Christmas song and given an extra kick by Rick's Trick

I've always been a huge Bee Gees fan, from their sixties almost folk singer roots, the disco superstardom and then the really classy AOR they produced till the end, not to mention their fantastic production skills for other artists. I was lucky enough to work with Robin a few times over the years with Leslie Mandoki and re-arranging Bee Gee three part harmonies for Robin's solo tours. I really can't think of a more humble, kind man who was a world wide megastar and huge talent. Working with him are some of my most treasured memories and I love the heart rending vulnerability his voice could portray.

Graham Bonnet was born in Skegness on 23rd December 1947 and celebrates his 75th birthday today. He first made the chart headlines in 1968 with The Marbles (No, I hadn't heard of them either!), while his first eponymous solo album went gold in Australia in 1977. He struck the motherlode the following year when he joined Rainbow for one album and a series of gigs, including the first ever Monsters of Rock at Castle Donnington in 1980. Later on he sang with MSG and Alcatrazz and also released solo material including the album 'Line-Up' with the able assistance of Messrs Rossi & Parfitt, Cozy Powell and Micky Moody. All in all he has participated on 30 albums in over 50 years of recording. There are lots of great clips out there of Graham pushing his marvellous voice to the limit, but mentioning his special day gives me the chance to play this cracking Chuck Berry track from the 1981 album. Happy birthday Graham.
