How could I forget the birthday of the singer with one of my favourite rock 'n' roll bands of the 1980s - Dan Baird of The Georgia Satellites, who celebrates his 69th birthday today. And here's a great clip of him taking lead vocals on a track from their first album, 'Railroad Steel'. Have a good one Dan!

I'm not all that familiar with Georgia Satellites. I bought a 12" single back in the early 80's called Battleship Chains but never followed it up with anything else. So that's about all I know. And that clip makes me wonder why! It's great stuff I am aware that they have admiration amongst Quo fans and have seen one or two videos posted on various forums. Nice 👍

As mortified mentioned, I bought the "Battleship Chains" on 12" as well as "Keep Your Hands To Yourself" single in 1987.

Mike Scott, founder member of The Waterboys, was born in Edinburgh on 14th December 1958 and is 64 today. Their big hits were 'Whole of the Moon', 'Fisherman's Blues' and 'Glastonbury Song', but I also like this recent one, which came out in 2019, 'Where the Action Is'.

I didn't know Mike Scott was born in Edinburgh 👍 Not a particular favourite of mine, The Waterboys. Although I suppose I only really know The Whole of the Moon and I didn't like that. I've just had a look to see when that was a hit and I could have sworn it was the 90's. Alas, it was longer ago than that A mention for Cliff Williams today as well, who's 73 today. Played on this absolute gem

Beethoven was born on 16th December 1770, Noel Coward was born on the same day in 1899. Benny Andersson of ABBA was born in 1946 and is 76 today, while Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top is one of our 49rs and is 73 today. This clip is from a pre-Eliminator gig and shows Billy on rhythm/lead guitar and vocals on their 1973 single 'La Grange' from the 'Tres Hombres' album.

Ah, Billy Gibbons. Love the man. Been a fan since the days of the first single of ZZ Top's I ever bought, which was Arrested For Driving While Blind. A favourite track of mine to this day. I believe the beards came about after the band took a sabbatical and travelled through the Himalayas. That was the story at the time anyway before they recorded Deguello. Could be an urban myth though. But I remember reading Gibbons' story about the the track Ten Foot Pole from the El Loco album which was about some large, unidentified creature they were shown lying in a shack half way up a mountain. Always found the story amusing, especially when listening to the song Ludwig Van I also stick on in passing when I'm in the mood. I have all 9 symphonies conducted by Daniel Barenboim with the Staatskapelle (a German orchestra). Wrote a mean tune did Ludwig despite being aurally challenged. Benny Andersson needs no introduction. Although I'll never really forgive him for inflicting the film Mamma Mia on me. Not entirely his fault. I was 'encouraged' to watch it in a deal involving a World Cup match I wanted to see when Holby was on Nevertheless.... Mad dogs and Englishmen? I'll be honest I've never seen a mad dog in the midday sun. Mind you, to be fair, I've never seen a mad dog.

Paul Rodgers, another of our 49rs, was born in London on the 17th December 1949 and is 73 today. Musically Mr Rodgers has led a hectic musical life indeed! He joined Free in 1968 as a singer/songwriter and helped them into the big time by co-writing their biggest hit, 'All Right Now' which was on their 'Fire and Water' LP. They released six albums before disbanding in 1973, with Rodgers going on to form Bad Company in the same year. That band have released a dozen studio albums and still exist, although Rodgers intersperses his work with them, solo work and also sings with the Brian May/Roger Taylor Queen when they go on tour since 2005.
Back to 'All Right Now' and here they are, playing it on the 'Doing Their Thing' Granada TV music show on 24th July 1970 - the week before Quo rolled into town and did their selection on the same show!!!

Paul Rodgers supported Quo of course in 1997. Often considered to have the finest voice in rock and won every music paper poll going back in the early to mid-70's.
I am happy to subscribe to the fact he's certainly been one of the best. Always found his singing style very controlled. Pretty much no histrionics.
I've owned bits and pieces of his work over the years. Only one Free single (Wishing Well) but quite a few Bad Company albums, the album he recorded with Brian May and Roger Taylor and his solo albums, Muddy Water Blues and The Royal Sessions.
All good stuff 👍

Always loved PR’s voice - I remember reading an interview with (my own favourite vocalist) Kansas’ Steve Walsh, years back. Steve was saying that one of his role-models was PR, which was kinda unusual at a time when a ‘common’ inspiration for many was Percy Plant and his ridiculous screaming, moaning and wailing🙄 (glad to see he’s since calmed down and grown up… somewhat!!) Yep, Paul is a class apart👍
