Um, folks - I'm lost here [aka, I can't be arsed to read thru all the thread] - is there a noticably better version than the one on B2B? If 'Yes' where is it?

I don't think it's noticeably better, personally. But it's the 7" single that was released at the time and is available on the Pictures release from 2008 as well as the Back to Back deluxe edition. It might be on other compilations that I'm not aware of. I wouldn't get your hopes up though

I was thinking the same thing. But it is remarkable why the new version wasn't released on 12 Gold Bars II. Surely it was still fairly fresh and not yet lost. Give me a day or 2 and I'll video it, just working away at the mo. But will do it no problem. Not suggesting your a liar for a minute, but a video of a record going round on a turntable won't prove a thing as you could play the re-recorded version in the background instead. Its an impossible way of proving anything. And even if you play the last few seconds of the previous song to make it look plausible still wouldn't prove anything as its easy to make up playlists of anything. Its very possible an odd miss print if you like, or miss pressing did slip the net which included the re-recorded version, but to own a copy must make it quite rare for collectors. Personally I was amazed the re-recorded version wasn't included on 12 Gold Bars II in the first place as it wasn't long out of the charts, but obviously for some reason we don't know they only used the album version. I don't think it was time restraints due to the album version being slightly shorter, with it weighing in at 3.37 minutes, whereas the re-recorded version is 4.10 minutes. So only 33 seconds difference. Probably the time of Frames guitar solo 😉 we were so easily pleased in the 80's 🙄 I hate to say but I think this saga will remain a mystery only the coked up management running quality control in the record company back then would know, but no hang on they wouldn't as they wouldn't have known what day the week it was.

12 Gold Bars Vol II was really disappointing. We had to buy a double album in the UK which I thought, even at the time, was ridiculous exploitation because we all had the first one. And even more so when it displayed the end of the Milton Keynes gig on the front sleeve. Talk about dangling a carrot 🙄 I couldn't have told you which version of Going Down Town Tonight was on it because I never played it. I don't think I've ever played any Quo compilation. And there's been plenty of them! But this was Quo to a T. Or whoever was in control of releases. 12 Gold Bars famously didn't even have the live EP version of Roll Over Lay Down on it. The actual hit. It's just a well worn tale for the long standing Quo fan. How many times has Whatever You Want been the B-side or extra track with a single? You get fed up with it. But you stick around anyway. Funny individual, the Quo fan Exploited for their loyalty?

It depends on personal opinion, but the better re-recorded version which features a guitar solo is on the Pictures box set, and Back to Back deluxe edition cd.

But you stick around anyway. Funny individual, the Quo fan Exploited for their loyalty? I couldn't agree more about all of that. I think 12 Gold Bars 1 is a time capsule of when Quo we're at their very best in terms of singles. Well to us anyway. That said, I know some younger fans that prefers volume 2, I do think it depends when they discovered Quo. I was roughly 6 or 7 when I actually discovered Quo, which would have been sometime in the mid 70's, 75 or 76 when my Gran bless her bought me one of those Top of the pops albums for my birthday, the ones with the pretty girls on the front cover. It included In my chair, so I think the album was already 5 or 6 years old, probably bought at a second hand shop, but it did look brand new, so not sure if those compilations perhaps we're being constantly churned out regardless of the year they were covering, not sure. They we're the equivalent of the Now thats what I call music series at the time. The only problem was it wasn't the original artists on them, but just hearing their version of In my chair was enough to make me put some Quo albums on my Christmas wish list that year, so from memory I soon had Hello, and On the level in my collection. The rest as they say is history. I basically had to wait nearly a decade before I seen Quo live, I wasn't really old enough to see them until The End Of The Road Tour, or had anyone to go with. Going back to the 12 Gold Bar thing, I do think it depends on when any fan discovered Quo as to how well you recieve the music from the period its from. Thats why I do think theres an argument for a volume III because there are fans that didn't discover Quo until the noughties, or late 90's. I think Quo's career are made up of 3 chunks, maybe even 4 chunks. But volume 1 covers what some fans say is their golden years, then to some volume 2 is their favourite period. And I'm certain had their been that absent volume 3, it too could be some fans favourite period, especially as it covers from Rollin' Home right through to The party aint over yet. Its quite plausible that is some fans favourite period as its simply down to timing of when they got into Quo and age. Just as volume 1 could be the most popular to most, but not all. Volume 1 is guilty for missing top ten hits like Pictures of matchstick men, and Ice in the sun, whereas volume 2 doesn't miss out anything top 20 or higher as far as I'm aware. And my imaginary version of volume 3 wouldn't have left anything out top 20 or higher either. I know I'm sounding like a cracked record lol 😊 but I do think management missed out on an opportunity to release a volume 3, I will probably bang that drum to my grave. Especially as there has been some howler compilations I wouldn't even play. I know there is the argument, well why release a volume 3 when we have all the songs elsewhere, but not all fans actually have those songs on anything, especially the single versions. I rest my case 👌 🙏

They only type of compilation / collection I want to see released is on from the vaults. All in all, I've given up on expecting any form of decent archival release, as should everyone else.

Someone needs to do a poll - best / most well-known/popular compilation...
Also, someone needs to compile a list of them all, from the ones sanctioned by the band down to the total obscurities.
I might try and do it...
But anyone willing to put a bet on how many, ballpark, there are?!

Yet another Quo mystery.

Quo compilations start way back, I think in the 60's, with Status Quotations and it's pretty much never stopped.
There will, literally, be hundreds. And that's just in the UK!
If I see one I haven't noticed before or one I think might be new, I have a quick look to see if it has anything on it of interest. Last time I found anything was with the Whatever You Want - The Essential Status Quo from 2016 which, to my delight, had the Milton Keynes Medley on it. First time ever on CD. So that was quite a surprise!
I didn't know at the time it was being released as part of another collection soon after. Boxed vinyl I think.
But it is very, very rare you find anything that you don't already have.

Made me laugh that one. anyway i had a listen and it's the orignial version, I was convinced it was the re recorded version, I've heard it so many times now i am wondering where, I do listen to a lot of stuff while driving so must be B2B deluxe issue. Starting to doubt my own name now, I was 100% convinced it was on 12 gold bars. Sorry lads
