When in the mood recently, have listened to 'Can't Be Done' and 'Too Close To The Ground' in the car. Not too bad really as rock-pop songs go. 'Too close..' to my ears back in '83 seemed to have more integrity to the rest somehow, bar the completely unwelcome studio-fied drums in the solo. I was a sucker for guitar arpeggio stuff with the chorus/flanger effect in songs at the time. As Alan said, MT is a nice little pop song but too much of a culture shock for the die hards and better suited as a Rossi release. Though I suspect even Rick loved it being a huge hit as he loved having hits more than anything else really. Still remember the first time I had heard 'Ol' Rag Blues'. Driving home from work in '83 with Radio 1 on the car radio. Possibly half listening or too much traffic noise but thinking this record is pretty good, I wonder who the band is? I can't believe that I didn't recognise it as being Quo. Fair points, but I guarantee you Alan and Rick didn't think this was a Quo song, rI know Rick knew it was crap, but it would sell. They were all off their heads at this time, and the whole album reflects it. A break should have happened after 1982, and things might have felt different witha year or 2 off..?

It was the cropped hair of Alan and Rick that threw me. Far more devastating than the mediocre music they were releasing!! At least they looked like Quo by the time the EOTR tour came about
