As usual, I disagree with the reviewer. No way is this a 6 out of 10 job. More like 3

I notice at the bottom of the first advert it says "shortly on compact disc". Seriously new technology for the day! It was another 5 years before I bought a CD player and my first discs.
Incidentally, I managed to get the original CD of this album in 1988 along with 12 Gold Bars but I never got my hands on the early CD releases of Never Too Late and 1+9+8+2 which, I think, might have been the only others issued before the "Back 2 Back" series in 1990.
But someone can put me right on these because I'm not 100% sure.

As usual, I disagree with the reviewer. No way is this a 6 out of 10 job. More like 3 I will always stand in defence of Ol' Rag Blues. Ian Birch sounds like a thoroughly decent bloke you'd happily share a pint with. I remember buying this and just being deflated skimming through the tracks for the first time. Everything sounded so uninspired and stodgy. Apart from Ol' Rag Blues of course.

Thinking back, I remember not particularly loving the two singles that came out in advance. They were OK and were improved a little by the 12" versions. But nothing earth-shattering. There was so much better music around then, which was quite disappointing. A Quo album was either the best album or close to the best album in any given year. The first side of the album I can live with. Again, it's OK and maybe on a par with some of 1+9+8+2. And Too Close To The Ground has always stood out. But the second side is as bad as it gets from my perspective. Good word, 4th Chord; uninspired. In retrospect, of course, we now know why. Although sometimes I think we give them that excuse too easily.

The best stuff on it, in my opinion, comes from Rick, Andy and Alan... The worse of it is all Francis' material...
Given what we know now, I wonder...
Would you have preferred future albums of material like Ol'Rag Blues, TCTTG, No Contract, You're Kind of Love? Or, would you want albums with material like Stay The Night, Win Or Lose, MT and GDTT?*
*I know Francis didn't write GDTT but, he's the only one on it

Given how much I bash everything after 1981, it might be surprising to hear that I play this album on a regular basis. I get why those who grew up with Quo would hate it, but for someone sifting through their backlist with no prior knowledge, this isn't nearly as bad as most people think it. I don't view it as Status Quo, however, so I'm not really comparing it to what came before. This is a different band, one with a fairly average drummer instead of JC. Quo 2 was a good band, they just weren't Status Quo.

Had a listen yesterday and it was surprisingly good. Remember at the time I played it to a non-Quofan and he mentioned the intros that are always promising, but the rest of the songs being too bland. I think Resurrection, Big Man and I Should Have Known fall into that category. I haven't got the time to go into the entire album, but I was amazed how good I Want the World to Know was: it's got the Wild Ones vibe, shame the entire album sounded so 80s.

Like all the albums for the best part of 30 years after Just Supposin' there is stuff that is decent and loads that isn't.
As a kid I enjoyed most of it but I think it speaks volumes I don't listen to it at all these days. Always loved Ol rag blues. A decent lightweight pop/rock song.
