Favourite Quo Album: On The Level
|
Post by RED on Jan 16, 2016 13:28:11 GMT
8/10 Always liked the sound of this album, much heavier sounding than the previous 4 or so albums. Take me away, Carol, Don't stop me now and Riverside are my favourites. Mountain lady and Long ago are also decent tracks too. The lack of vocal input from Rick and Alan is the only downer for me, always thought alan singing Mountain lady would be better but not too bothered. A solid 8 for me

Always been undecided just how much I do like this album, although I do like it - if you see what I mean I'll think about it and try and give a rating.... I've thought about it, and still don't know One thing I am sure about is my favourite song on the album is Mountain Lady

my first proper Quo album (I only had 12GB and pye comps upto this point) and was my favourite for a long, long time. released at a time when the band were courting Heavy Metal fans, it remains the only Quo album without ballad or acoustic moment. And yes it would be better without some of the backing vocals, and yes some vocals from Rick and Alan would have improved it further. And yes Riverside has a demo feel to it, but god it's still wickedly good as it is But the fact that this album could have been even better doesn't detract from the fact it rocks like hell and just works! This hits the spot, and god it's powerful. I suspect that if we checked out the ages of the posters here, it would be far more popular with the 40 somethings than with the late 50's and 60 something fans Never again did Quo have this oomph Love it. I just wish I got Mountain Lady like others do, as I find it very listenable but not awesome. I'll go with 9.75. A remix could take it to 11

I would imagine if the sound was 'tweaked' a little like happened with RAOTW album that NTL might appeal to more people who are less keen on it. However, I am also guessing that those who are particular fans of it like the untidy edges to it and will want it kept as it is.
That's good then
For me, in terms of those untidy edges, it doesn't work in the same way as it did for Piledriver a decade earlier. It lacks that retro blues rock loveliness - but its still a good album
Still can't give it a definitive rating though

I do thank you, CL! It sounded right in swedish, so I thought: you are the right person to try it on in another language. OnT: The weaker tracks imo are NTL and Long Ago, but they are not bad. The seriously cool video of a meh-ish song saves the score for SBYBIL. DER Bassplayer smashes in Mountain Lady. Riverside and Take Me Away are so good! As wise peeps have pointed out: a bit of TAFKAR domination vocally, sound is a bit distorted all over and a remix, yes please! 7,5-8/10 is the rating.
