Parfitt, Coghlan, Lancaster, Rossi... the original line-up, and in my opinion, what a fuckin' album to go out with!! The title track opens the album with a punch, a bit like the way Roll Over Lay Down opens Hello! or Is There A Better Way opens Blue For You. Something 'Bout You Baby I Like is good at this tempo and wish they'd left it that way. Take Me Away, Falling In Falling Out and Carol are all equally good, with Carol being one of Quo's most driving songs, with a few others on this album.
Side two of this album is possibly my favourite album side by anyone ever. Long Ago has a nice heavy and chunky groove with Rossi's mildly nasalish vocals on there. Mountain Lady is a great rocker with a great jangly sound. Don't Stop Me Now, again up there with Quo's heaviest and is a great songs for long road journeys. Enough Is Enough is maybe my favourite poppier Quo song, while still a great wee rocker.
Riverside......... the first words that came into my head when I first this were "Holy f**k!!". Although it's believed to be a drum machine on this, if Coghlan actually played on it he did a feckin' great job of it. The fade-in intro and outro, bluesy and chunky and the fast and hard riffed mid makes it one of my top 10 favourite Quo tracks by far.
A 10 for me, because of this albums sheer power, it's in my top 5 Quo albums.

NTL is not 'nice and easy'.(except Something bout baby). Its dark, loud, very hard rocking album. 10 points.

I do love this album without a doubt.
Time and place.
It was I think the first full album I heard apart from 12 Gold Bars.
However it's far from perfect. The production is very much 'of it time'.
The backing vocals and keyboards often detract from the songs.
Some of my all time favourites to be found on here.
I will give it a biased 8/10 but really it's a 7/10.

The end of an era &, for me, a rather disappointing end - although not as disappointing as the start of the next era! To my ears this sounds very much like the leftovers from the Just Supposin' sessions & proves they were right not to go for the double album. Most of the songs seem to vary between mediocre & undeveloped. This includes one of the better attempts Riverside - it sounds like it's going to develop into a really meaty song & then seems to go nowhere. All this topped off with a couple of covers, one a great Chuck Berry number they'd had in the set over a decade before & the other evidence of their inability to come up with another single after a relative glut on Just Supposin'. Also, despite what John Eden says, the sound seems to lack something compared to the previous effort. Imo, it's sandwiched above If You Can't Stand The Heat but below Rockin' All Over The World at the bottom of their '70-'81 output - 5.75/10.

Dennis is one of the very few who don't have blinkers on on this forum , haven't heard this album since 83-84ish and I still remember it as another lazy piss poor album from a band that had just lost interest in making good 'rock boogie music' Rossi's influence ? who knows . 5/10 , they where capable of so much more .

This was a bit disappointing to me compared to WYW and even JS. Suffering from the awful squeaky backing vocals of JS throughout, but without the rockier JS songs to save it. There is nothing on here that has the calibre of heaviness of C&G, or OTE - the whole album is produced as light rock. I could hack into pretty much every song, but I won't because I don't hate the album, but it is for me worse than any other 70's Quo album - there are some songs on 1982 that are better than some on NTL. Mountain Lady is its one saving grace, simply because it is so amazingly uplifting. 6/10 It could benefit greatly from a remix. Oh - and one other thing - apart from a break on SBYBIL, Rossi sings everything - it lacks that variety between songs that all the other albums benefitted from. I stated a few times that Carol would have been better sung by Al. A couple of rockin' Berry songs in the encore could have been quite good. |

Like this one a lot, especially the wonderful Take Me Away (one of my favourite Quo songs) and also Riverside and Don't Stop Me Now. However, don't care for the title track or SBYBIL. 8/10.

I really like some of the stuff on this album, actually prefer it as an overall album to Just Supposin', I don't know it just has a bit of a dark sleazy heavy vibe, but very Quo and just works really well in places and when I listen to it on the right day.  Take Me Away, Mountain Lady, Don't Stop Me Now and Riverside are the main stand out tunes, but I do like Never Too Late as well. Something 'Bout You Baby I like is a tune I like, but on the album sounds a bit too polished or lightweight to me, which is interesting cos lots of this album are very heavy and hard hitting, always enjoyed it live. Like on some other Quo albums this is an album that can benefit from a rejig of the running order, my custom made cd for home hifi runs like this below. The first half 1-5 is pretty stomping to me, just great heads down fun if nothing else. 1. Never Too Late 2. Take Me Away 3. Don't Stop Me Now 4. Mountain Lady 5. Riverside 6. Falling In Falling Out 7. Long Ago 8. Enough Is Enough 9. Something 'Bout You Baby I like 10. Carol A solid 7/10 for me. Yes it has some sounds of it's time creeping in and one or two areas could have been made better, but some real good rockers on here that I do really like and can really get into, especially the first 5 above. Oh and is Mountain Lady one of the most overlooked and underrated songs from Quo? The more I listen to it, I think maybe yes, definitely one of them for me.  |

I really, really like This Album. No. I love it! The songwriting is great, although there aren't tracks such as BFM or ROLD, which alternate between loud and quiet parts etc. You know what I mean (I hope). But I do love this"softer", more melodic side of the FF - just as much as I love the heavier side. My favourite song is Long Ago, together with the title track, Falling In Falling Out and Enough Is Enough. Carol is great, as is Riverside. The rest is very good. I do like this album much more than Just Supposin, which, as we know were recorded at the same time, of the same material. And as mentioned, the only downer is the lack of Ricks and Alans voice, as Francis sings everything. All in all, Never too late is easily in my Quo Top 5 with 9 points!

Strange animal this one, isn't it?. As far back as I can remember, it's always divided opinions. I remember stealing this one from my old man when he had it (when I was 10)! In my teen years, the large bunch of Quo-ites would be discussing tracks and albums and this would be a love/hate album. So as gatesheadbanger says, it really is a marmite album. It does lack a heavy classic in the likes of Big Fat Mama, 4500x, IIRM/GGH and it parts it does show it its age but I do like it. There are some really well written songs and some fantastic playing by the whole band, including some amazing solos which we sadly don't get to see on an album bearing the Status Quo name again. So the single "Something 'bout You Baby I Like", again splits opinion and again I quite like it. In fact it's probably not bettered as a single until "Red Sky" and then "You'll Come Round" but that's just my opinion. As several have said, NTL could have benefited with the addition of AL's and RP's voice. Also, I agree with Detroit and have held a firm belief that Carol (although I bloody love the song as I still give it a 10) would have sounded better sung By AL and played slightly (and I do mean only slightly) slower. I think Quo…. No…The FF and Chuck Berry was a great combination. Wish they had done more. As some have said, this album would benefit from a remix AND remaster similar to the John Eden RAOTW has seen. Personal favourite tracks would be Take Me Away, Carol, Mountain Lady, Long Ago & Don't Stop Me Now. Never Too Late 7/10 SBYBIL 7/10 Take Me Away 10/10 Falling In Falling Out 6/10 Carol 10/10 Long Ago 8/10 Mountain Lady 10/10 Don't Stop Me Now 8/10 Enough Is Enough 7/10 Riverside 7/10 Adding up the totals gives an average of 8/10. Yeah, I'm happy with that. I like it. **NOTE**
As this was recorded around the same sessions as the Just Supposin' album I made myself a playlist of 5 of my favourite from each of the two albums, ironically called Just Too Late. The track listing went like this: Side1
