I will give it a big swerve. If you find his normal persona annoying you definitely should give this a go. Superb writing, characters and mix of humour and tear inducing pathos. Wonderful TV.

Thanks railroad007 for the tip on that series. I just decided to give it a go and ended up watching all 6 episodes of series 1. Yes sentimental in parts, I enjoyed his graveside chats with that lady, and had a few belly laughs thrown in such as the time Tony and Lenny visit the lady who makes tarts out of her breast milk.... when Lenny threw the thing down his gob while Tony was gagging haha. Series 2 tomorrow

It's the whole thing PF,it's brilliant and seriously multi-layered,achingly funny on one hand but a real look at despair on another. Can't be compared to anything anyone's done before.

The thing with Ricky Gervais is, he isn't a great stand-up comic but he is a brilliant and very inventive writer. Innovative and ground breaking. There are parallels with Ben Elton in that respect.
For example, compare the early 80's rants of the latter with something like Blackadder The Third.
The Office, Extras, An Idiot Abroad and now After Life. It's quite a CV.

Me and Mrs Mortified watched the whole of the first series last night. And I have to say it was superb. We watched a couple then had to watch all six. We'll do the second lot tonight.
Poignant and achingly funny in equal measures. Not an easy thing to achieve. A very good cast as well. Heavyweight actors such as Penelope Wilton, Paul Kaye and David Bradley in principal roles.
Highly recommended. As already said, "the best thing on by a million miles".
