Date: 03/11/1983 Song: A Mess Of Blues Presenter: Peter Powell and Mike Read Chart Position: 24 Misc: Again in the studio for a new single. Either fake crowd noise or they're just mic'ed up too high. It's annoying either way. Link: Youtube While canned applause was used as the song's audio was fading out, notice how the TOTP studio audience were both seen & heard applauding after the track's earlier 'false' ending. The exact same happened two days later on a Saturday evening TV show hosted by Noel Edmonds, where he even went on to question Francis & Rick as to why they recorded the track in that way - see here

Great photos. Looking into it, the black and white picture I was referring to is from In My Chair as well. There's a few from the same session as the latter one. It's labelled as being from a performance of Caroline and has the date of 01/10/1973. If it is from a Caroline performance, it'd have to be the one missing from 18/10/73, but I'm not at all certain. Well definitely looks like they are playing 'Caroline', just from Rick's barre chord in 'F' and where Francis is freting.

Well definitely looks like they are playing 'Caroline', just from Rick's barre chord in 'F' and where Francis freting. Good spot. It doesn't look like it's from during the actual performance so perhaps thats why the clothing and set don't match up with what we have either; but I'd still suspect it to be the missing performance. There's at least two more photos from the same set out there. There was no TOTP on 01/10/73, but my guess for that would be that when archiving it they knew the month but not the precise date. edit: It's a very vague point, but at the very start of one of the surviving clips from the episode the week after the missing performance, you can briefly see what looks to be the light behind the guys in the photo. Clutching at straws I know.

Just spent a very enjoyable 45 mins flicking through his. Thanks for the project.
I remember the performances from around 1982 onwards. I do think you can see the behind the scenes tensions surface, particularly on GDTT where Alan and rick are constantly jostling to be next to Francis stage front. Also I remember the wanderer performance where Francis basically gives Alan the Shoulder the whole performance.
On the what you’re proposing vids were they filmed at the same time - looks like you have to group of lads in the hats giving it large pogoing up and down on both performances. Rossi handles it where he gets twatted in the face with the mic stand.
Thanks again

Date: 04/01/1973Song: Paper PlaneChart Position: NEWPresenter: Jimmy SavilleMisc: Missing. Same show that the Bowie "Jean Genie" performance that surfaced a few years ago came from. This however does exist in a private collection that is stuck a seemingly endless limbo. No-one has publicly seen the tape, which is one of a number from a home recording collection, so this may never be seen even though it does exist. Link: WIPED
Above: Quo performing Paper Plane on Top Of The Pops Also, here is a BBC news report about the discovery of the lost David Bowie footage from the same TOTP episode. What is mentioned at the very end of the report may be a cause for hope of Quo's performance of Paper Plane being eventually made available for us to see again..... at some point.

I'm kind of intrigued by this; considering on the video from two weeks later it appears to pan to the group in the studio. Is DLT green-screened in to a pre-made recording perhaps? From what I can see, in the first performance there are amps behind them and no audience behind. In the second there's a lot of audience members all around. I also can't conclusively tell if any of the crowd members are the same people, although they are acting the same. The band appear to be dressed the same, except Andy's lost his tie. hmm.

Check out Rick's silver platforms in the Caroline still. Class I have to hold my hands up and say that I have no recollection of Quo performing She Don't Fool Me on TOTP. Just goes to show.

Just like to echo what a brilliant thread this is! Thanks hershie Is it worth adding a comment about it being John’s last appearance on 3 /17 Dec 81?

This is a brilliant thread, ideal for lockdown, thanks hershie. Anyway I have done a little bit of detective work (as I have the square root of f*ck all to do at the moment, until I paint the fence!) I have just come off the phone to John Henshall who filmed it and is in possession of the David Bowie TOTP Jean Genie tape. I found him easily through Google. He only has the Bowie clip unfortunatley not the whole show with Quo playing Paper Plane. He really is a top man, we spoke for about 15 minutes about his time working for the BBC. He did say that a company called Kaleidoscope which finds lost TV programmes might be able to help. I have just emailed them with the details. Hopefully they can find that hidden gem!

If anybody out there is on Facebook( I am not) John Henshall also recommended that Ray Langstone is the man to touch base with. en-gb.facebook.com/saintsray

Oh, I forgot to mention that David Henshall told me that he also filmed the official End Of The Road Milton Keynes `84 concert. Quite an interesting morning for me then!

Oh, I forgot to mention that David Henshall told me that he also filmed the official End Of The Road Milton Keynes `84 concert. Quite an interesting morning for me then! He did the Television Lighting for the gig, whatever that is. Keith "Keef" Macmillan (Marcus Keef) [Keef Co. Production for the show] is still around but almost impossible to get a hold of to find out who owns the licensing for the Milton Keynes footage. Ros Storey, the guy that did the vision mixing for Milton Keynes, passed away some years back.

This one? It gives me a headache. Some incredible closeups of Al’s belly button there.
