Fabulous work. Kudos indeed! The Down Down promo (I think) is the one that turned up on the compilation video Rockin' Through The Years; 1986, was it? I can't remember if it was on TOTP. What a $hit memory, eh? There was a Supersonic (and cue Status Quo ) performance that I remember seeing but I take it that's the one that's been pulled here? The Roll Over Lay Down promo was very similar but I don't recall that being on TOTP, although I could be wrong. The BBC tended not to have 'live' tracks on the show back in the dark ages of the 70's. I can't remember the daft reason. But keep it going, mate. This is terrific stuff. Thank you! Oh jesus, I own that VHS. It got me into Quo as a small child watching it in fact! Yellow box, big "Channel 5" logo. My memory must be playing tricks on me though because I do not remember a Down Down promo at all. I'm almost inclined to say it used the NEC'82 performance or something, but I'm probably very wrong. There's a Supersonic performance, but then there's also what I had linked and now removed, which basically looks to be the same/similar performance but without the studio editing/cuts to control room etc that you got with that programme. I don't know if it was another promo recorded on the set, or from an alternate broadcast. - Quo on Supersonic - Quo on the Supersonic set? I'm honestly not sure about that second one.

The 2nd video link is from the original studio shoot for the Supersonic episode. Just an Alt take of what would eventually be used months later on the actual Supersonic episode. There wasnt a promo filmed for Down Down by the band. They've always seemed to use the NEC 1982 footage for it. Before then it was just various TV performances.

Pretty much what I thought; glad I'm not going mad.
The fact that the alternate edit/raw footage is out there suggests it had some usage though? There's another worse quality copy on YouTube that suggests it's been broadcast as a music video, even if it's not one officially put out by the band.

Great project and thread Hershie. Perfect time for us too. Hope you get to fill in the missing gaps.

Cheers, hershie and Quoincidence I always thought the Down Down performance we're talking about was the one from that compilation video, although I no longer have any Quo videos (gave 'em all away on the old official message board) so I am only recalling from memory. If it's from the NEC on there, I'm obviously mistaken. Happens a lot that I always thought it looked similar, in terms of where it was filmed that is, to the Roll Over Lay Down vid but without that irritating (and dizzying!) zooming in and out with the camera lens. I appreciate that neither were probably official promos. And I don't recall either being on TOTP. Incidentally, the video you've put up from January 1975 has "ARTE" in the corner, which I think is a German TV channel. The "Top of the Pops 70's" thing looks like a misnomer.

There's another worse quality copy on YouTube that suggests it's been broadcast as a music video, even if it's not one officially put out by the band. Not uncommon for an outtake / alt take to exist from a TV filming. Definitely didnt have another purpose, just a quick run to see what sort of camera angles would be best. Rick and Fran talking throughout the performance to one another and crew members running around the back. Definitely just a test run

It's definitely the TOTP performance - I've got the whole show and it's the same one played. German channels have rebroadcast a lot of Top of the Pops - a good number of the better recordings available online are from them. The full copy I've got is from a different German broadcast in fact. Unlike a bunch of other songs from the show it's not to a live audience though; so it's presumably pre-recorded.

Definitely just a test run My point was more that why would it have been released/used at all if it's just an outtake. And could it be the opposite, as in that a second cut was put together from the B-rolls to use the TV footage as a promo without it being clearly from Supersonic. It's irrelevant to this thread now anyway; I'm just blathering and thinking aloud!

But I'm pretty sure there was another for Roll Over Lay Down where the cameraman thought it was a great idea to zoom in and out quickly to the rhythm of the song. I'm probably wrong again but leave it with me. It's beginning to annoy me this whole dementia thing

This one? It gives me a headache. That's the one! Thought I was going mad OK, this is again only from memory but was this the vid that pitched up on the Rockin' Through The Years collection? Put me out my misery

Put me out my misery It's definitely on that one. With the scrolling yellow text across at the start of it. I want to say, from memory of a VHS I haven't seen in 20+ years, that Caroline and Down Down are from the NEC in '82 and everything else on there is a promo video. Paper Plane is the Marquee footage overdubbed. My main memory as a kid is being scared of the Dreamin' video and having to stop the tape before it..

Down Down was from the NEC. I was spouting rubbish. And don't worry; I think a lot of people were scared by Dreamin'

Fantastic stuff, thanks. I have never seen the black and white footage of Caroline from 20/09/73 before!
