I've just watched the gig on-live stream. And this isn't the Status Quo we all know and love, but as a new band, led by Francis it turned into an excellent gig. Yes... that is what I really thought.
I don't know if was the size of the crowd which was massive. Or if the band have now bedded in after being on the road for a few months but they actually played well and didn't simply go through the motions. There was a lot less cabaret and far more musicianship than I've seen in a long time.
For the first half of the gig, I thought it was okay. No goosebumps moments as I still get with the FF line-up.
The atmosphere changed with ITAN (not a song I like but I know it goes down well in Europe.) That got the biggest response from the crowd on 'Stand up and Fight". And without any need to prompt them into responding (unlike RAOTW near the end when Francis said, "every fucker sing it" before they joined in.)
Maybe the audience response to ITAN changed them up a gear because on ROLD, Francis was on fire. I've not heard him play like that in a very long time. Sure, he's changed some of the original arrangement, but why not. He certainly enjoyed playing it for once.
He then had a solo spot - very brief - where the rest of the band disappeared for about a minute, possible two. And this lead into Down Down.
I dunno but this verse had a double meaning for me. He's going to keep on going whether we like it or not. And it his band.
I want all the world to see
To see you're laughing
And you're laughing at me
I can take it all from you,
Again again again again again again again
Deeper and down...
Personally, the gig ended there for me.
But they carried on with WYW and RAOTW. And the magic drained away. As I said above, he had to work hard to get them to join in with the chorus of RAOTW.
The crowd did clamour for an encore though. And they returned with Rock'n'Roll Music and into BBJ. Again, new arrangement for that and Francis played brilliantly.
I'm almost tempted to see them live. But I wonder if this magic was a one off and once on a routine tour, the old boredom, play-it-by the numbers would return. If I went, I wouldn't think of them as Quo but as FRQuo and in the same vein as JCQuo. However, its a big if and I'll probably pass in the end. They don't have the X-factor without Rick.
