Perspective suggests that if he is, as he has said previously more than once, carrying on because he has such a large family to support, despite their ages, then he is highly fortunate because of his rare lifestyle (in context of the average jo) that he can easily turn around those pressures if they exist. Its not just the tours, the albums, royalties etc but its all the promotional gimmicks, whiskey promotions, you name it etc. Putting aside opinion of the quality of the music or the taste of the gimmicks and promotions, or who actually likes them, he has nonetheless plenty of sources at his disposal to quickly make a difference at any given time.
Life for most of us isn't like that at all, so any concern for his welfare in terms of balancing retirement and earning money needs to be tempered in my opinion. Plus though he kicked the habit long ago, the amount of substance he put up his nose would have paid many of the biggest day to day bills for the average mortal for quite some considerable time.

Yes, I think he's afraid to sit at home and enjoy life. Retirement is hard for most people and I think he's fighting that. He has the reputation of a recluse within the band,so being at home won't bother him. Plus he can still write for himself or other people. Maybe he really is an insecure little show off and just can't kick the ego trip of playing to an audience. Agree about being him recluse but he won't have a purpose in life and once he's retired from touring. I can't see him really writing/producing music with or without others, can you? What will he do all day without work? He's said often enough that he doesn't enjoy beach holidays and has to be doing something. And all he can do is tour with Quo. It has been his only job. By all means chose to take a cynical spin on this, that is your right. But I've watched both my dad and my uncle, both reclusive men, struggle with retirement. I'm Francis would have similar problems and that is why I think he continues touring.

Francis lives a very different lifestyle in a goldfish bowl on the one hand that might lend to him to wanting to recluse himself, but in other ways has others waiting hand on foot on him that will ensure he is unlikely to ever be out in the cold on his own in other respects. Especially based on the fact that he has spent more time away from home than in it, it is unlikely to suddenly start being a problem for him. In relative terms.
He has completely different pressures to the average person, but also has ease of access to travel and luxuries unlike many/most average people. He has had, and will continue to find wider experiences put his way on a plate that many would only dream in wonder about.
Its impossible to measure how he may or may not react in retirement simply because his life has been/ and is so vastly different to most people who approach retirement. On balance one thing is for sure, he is approaching retirement with few if any of the vulnerabilities that many of the much poorer in this country face. He is unlikely to need a food bank any time soon.
For many trying to make ends meet, put a meal on the table and struggle to even own a home they can call their own, worrying about getting bored and restless in retirement is the very least of worries. If its a worry at all. Just getting there in one piece at all is the hardest thing.
So I don't see him having many, if any, of the same problems the majority do. He is very very lucky if he only has to worry about getting bored and having little to do.
Perspective.

He doesn't like rehearsing or so he says. So he has the perfect job. As he doesn't change the setlist. He can just concentrate on being the insecure show off. I am sure after living his life for decades he will be frightened of change. I see him like many other old stages like BB King, it's his way of life.

I have seen plenty of men at my workplace die soon after retirement. They worked for 50 years and when they weren't working or doing overtime, they were in the pub.Their lack of hobbies or things to keep themselves mentally active took it's toll. Francis's problems in this area pale in comparison and as others have said, now he is indisputably top dog in the band, that may have reignited his enthusiasm. He has said that he loves gardening. He has a home studio and can invite people over to collaborate on new material. He enjoys crosswords. He won't be staring at the wall or drinking himself into a stupor. Ego and money are his main reasons for carrying on,which were the same reasons in 1986 he came back to the lifestyle he publicly abandoned in 1984.

Maybe if his project with Hannah Rickard makes him "the next big thing in country music" (his words, not mine) he can retire Quo and make money doing that instead? But I doubt it given his own solo album flopped due to woeful promotion.

As a Liverpool fan it pains me to quote Fergie, but there was lots of truth in his "too old to retire" comment
Francis hasn't really slowed down, and to stop now would be very hard for him. And as others say, probably dangerous.
A workaholic colleague of mine retired without any planning. Six weeks later he was found dead in front of the telly.

An album and more gigs with Alan and Jc would maybe not have earned him as much money but would have restored the bands credibility Sadly no chance now Cheers Hi All, Totally agree with you there matey, I have banged on in other threads about either new material from the 'FF as an EP/Album (Pref the latter) or along with a 'CQ' new material album. Either put out as separate efforts or as a 'Dbl Album' featuring each would have helped the other out in sales especially as 'Dbl Album' format IMO..
On a managerial level they totally missed the boat at raising both bands profiles higher instead seeming to be happy with letting 'Quo' bite the dust in an ever decreasing spiral downwards to the final destruction somebody needs a good kick up their backside as this is a complete shambles especially since 'Rick's passing (RIP Rick ) Sadly nobody cares even in the band it looks like....

Of course Francis enjoys being famous and in the limelight, that's why he went into show business in the first place.
However once someone has been in the limelight, it is quite hard to leave it. I agree that he won't be sitting alone or staring at a wall wondering what to do. But life will be very different if he does retire and it takes time to adjust whoever you are. And I don't think he's ready to do that yet. Especially having just watched their set at Wacken.

Quite an interesting thing some of you seem to be missing...
If it's about the love of playing, being in the spotlight etc etc, then why not do it on his own and bury the Quo name?
He was handed the chance, by sad circumstances, to end it and the spotlight would have been on him... "Oh what will he do without Rick??!"

Compared to most of us he still earns big money, travelling, being cosseted and looked after, travelling the world all expenses paid.
Can't say I blame him, whatever his personal wealth.

But for business reasons, he's keeping the Quo name. Money. The Brand. Much as I enjoy JCQuo, John plays very small venues in comparison. I can't see Francis accepting that. He only filled theatres on his solo tour and the 2nd one was cancelled due to poor ticket-sales. So why would Francis give up the brand that he invented for that?

The one he invented, along with Rick, Alan, John and Roy? If it's purely for the love of playing, if it's purely for the love of money, he would have fucked off back in 1981, like he threatened to
