I give up!
Just seen footage of Francis backstage at Download / doing media stuff.....wearing a shirt and tie!!
Who else would do that?
It is an act of rebellion? Or am I wrong to wonder if it's anything at all?
I don't get him. Do you?

It's his glasses that I don't understand, surely he could find a cooler pair. Better still, have his eyes lasered or wear contact lenses, he looks so much better without specs. And why doesn't he wear them on stage?

And why doesn't he wear them on stage? He wore them at a few gigs this year... Anyways, I don't care what he looks like. The guy only ever looked cool with his Stan Smiths, t shirt and denim waistcoat. And that was 40 years ago Alan, Rick, JC and Pete have all looked cooler than him from 77 onwards

I get the feeling that part of the reason for Francis being so keen for the band to end in 1984 was the fact that by then he had outgrown rock 'n' roll and didn't want to put on an act anymore. He really seemed to desperately want to act his age and his refusal to wear blue jeans onstage and every media appearance nowadays with him wearing a fleece, shirt, tie and glasses, indicate to me that he has gone even further down this road.

I'm not surprised. There 's a picture from the 70s of Francis in white shirt, black tie and green bomber jacket. He was born after WW2 and grew up in the 50s when people were more formal and wore shirt/ties even causally. Its who he is. Apart from the specs, I like him in suits.

At least that beard a year or two back didn't last long - that is probably the biggest glitch I expect Eileen put her foot down with that one

I don't get him re his refusal to wear blue jeans, his negativity re "the frantics"...his many, many contradictions I just don't get him I'm not saying "he's a nob" - (I don't think he is). He has always been a great hero of mine, particularly when I was growing up. In fact, I'd like to understand him better. I'm sure there must be plenty of fans that get him better than I do, hence the post. I might learn something!

I'm with kachunk. Also when I read XSall areas I was surprised to learn how unmacho he was even as a young man, 'cos of the image the band projected in the 70s. At secondary school in South London, he had to pretend to be hard or he would have been bullied. So he adopted that early persona. So I think his attitude isn't necessarily a negative one. I see him in later years as having the confidence to be who he wants to be. And that includes saying no more reunion gigs.

Threads trying to analyse Francis have been made on the previous mb's. He certainly grew up faster than Rick in terms of the lifestyle and image. He is also one of the most organised people there is with routine - down to the last detail. His attention to this and increasing need for self discipline also stem from the fact that he has always suffered from severe migraines and has to have a closely followed routine, down to meal times, sleep etc, so as to avoid as many triggers as possible.
Its documented he has played gigs suffering the worst of these. How he managed, who knows...

I see him in later years as having the confidence to be who he wants to be. And that includes saying no more reunion gigs. I understand that, and I appreciate he doesn't like / do macho. But he understands the biz, he get showbiz, he gets the importance of a brand, he sells us the coke formula line, he talks about giving the public what they want. The public want blue jeans. They want a guitary, heavier sound than he's been prepared to allow. They would have liked brand pony tail to continue. He knows all this. Is being who he wants to be and being Francis Rossi of SQ pulling in opposite directions? Seems so, perhaps that's why he referrs to it as a job. Mindue, seems to me he has a job where he is able to dispense with most of the bits of it he doesn't like or want. The rest of us can't have that! On the other hand, Quid Pro Quo struck me as a album where Francis was trying to make it sound like an album he thinks the public want from SQ. And I don't think he was personally happy with the result. He didn't want to strip naked for an album promo, but he did. The confidence of being who he wants to be? I still don't get him, sorry!
