Tomorrow, the meanwhile famous hard rock festival at Wacken in Germany is going to start. This year, for the first time, Status Quo will join. Quo's appearance had been announced shortly before Rick's death. Reading a recent interview of Francis with "Südtirol News" it seems that it won't become his favourite festival. An excerpt which I have retranslated into English:
Q: On Thursday you are playing at Wacken. 75,000 metalheads will be flooding this small town of about 1,800 inhabitants.
Francis Rossi: That we are going to appear among all these squallers, it makes me realize again that I am a pop musician. I like pop, country, blues - music you can sing along with. The idea to get on stage and to grunt, there are men behind it who are controlled by their genitals. That is show-off.
Q: Typical macho?
Francis Rossi: We males have incredible problems. So, when a group of females is gathering to solve a problem, it takes turns. Ask males to solve the problem and they start with a meeting to determine a leader. He will be the one with the most hairy chest, the greatest balls and the deepest voice. That's just not me. - But nevertheless it will be fun, it will pass, and then we will drive to the next show (laughing).

He forgets some people can like his pop rock as well as extreme metal. Rick lived a good bit of metal.

So he says he likes blues but says the blues never influenced him in Planet Rock...

So he says he likes blues but says the blues never influenced him in Planet Rock... Which is fair enough. Ozzy loves the Beatles, you wouldn't guess listening to Sabbath.

When Francis is talking about his aversion against rock music I am just wondering whether he has changed his mind at some particular time ago. I would really pity him if this is the honest bottom line of a life successful but in disguise. Moreover, why is Francis - who is always mentioning the professional music business - so snotty against some of the Quo fans and most of the Wacken visitors? Not many of them will take any notice of his words - otherwise he would feel their "macho" reaction right on the stage.

When I'm in a discussion with people about music taste, I tell them that it's easier and quicker for me to tell them the music that I don't like.
I detest and despise approx. 2% of 'music' with an intense and vitriolic hatred.
I obviously love QUO, but I have such a diverse taste in other types of music as well.
From Mozart to The Anti-Nowhere League.
If I could go back in time to see a band play live, I'd like to see Sly and The Family Stone, man, they were a Black Funk n Soul group with a white man on Drums.
Hey Francis, DANCE TO THE MUSIC, all kinds of music.

Unspoken Words, DWMT, PP, Electric Arena, Like It Or Not, Good Thinking, Reason For Living...I could go on really...are all blues based and his playing on those tracks and chord progressions are all based on the blues scales, notes, rhythms and style.
Therefore, he was influenced by it
