Christopher Guest, aka 'Nigel Tufnel' in the fictitious band, appears to suggest it during an Q and A some years ago. Listen from about a minute onwards. Quo were in LA, playing at the Whisky a Go Go in February 1974! Could that be Nuff he's imitating towards the end of the clip?

I believe the producers of the movie once admitted that it was based on Saxon, whom they followed around on tour for a while. Can't remember where I read that but it was probably in Classic Rock or something. And it was a while back. I know Rick always thought it was based on Quo, but I don't think it was. Although, to be fair, it could have been based on any number of daft HM acts in the 70's and 80's. A hybrid of them all

Great find quodec ! Sounds possible that it could have been Quo in the lobby! Maybe someone should ask Bob, he might remember! 😁 I’m assuming he would have been with them! I agree with mortified that Spinal Tap was an amalgamation of a lot of bands…. Quo never had pods on stage as far as I remember…. 😁

Thanks! I really enjoyed that clip. I'm impressed with his English accent for an American. Yes, I have seen the film but in that, I'd only heard him in character until now. It sounds to me that if it was Quo in the lobby in 1974, they were the inspiration for a film. But as others have said, the fictitious band is an amalgam of various bands at the time. And as a writer, you would do that for legal reasons. You don't want to be accused of defaming etc real people. I did enjoy the end of the clip about the argument over the bass guitar...

For me the part of Spinal Tap that resembles the Quo story the closest, is their 1960s, "hit," Listen to the Flower People. That seems to follow the same narrative as Quo with how they morphed from Matchstick Men into the hard rock band they became.

I can't imagine Alan forgetting his bass and didn't care, could be any band. The film is american, and most of the writers were american, so I can't think that the band were one of the inspirations. But who knows.

I think “ puppet show and Status Quo” could have been a reality when they were trying to break America lol

At the time of release, I thought there must have been something in it with the Quo link purely from the name, ie 2 words, 3 syllables Status Quo/Spinal Tap.
As has been mentioned, there is a Saxon connection as I believe Harry Shearer (the main writer?) managed to get to go on tour, as such, with Saxon to observe from the shadows. Though the psychedelic thing is very close to Quo's formative years and difficult to relate that to Saxon and the HM bands of the 80s. On the other hand, Quo didn't do the stripe spandex thing (god forbid!) so a melting pot situation.
Do you think that Spinal Tap was the inspiration for John C to do his Jazz Odyssey?!

My inner nerd surfaced this evening and I decided to have a look at t'interweb to see what UK bands were in LA in 1974. And, it would seem few if any were actually touring in the city that year save Mott the Hoople who played Santa Monica in April '74, with Pete Overend Watts as bassist AND Deep Purple who played in Long Beach in November '74, but they were a five piece band! I know this proves nothing, but along with coincidences such as the two main band members having dark and blond hair and a black album release, Quo were definitely in the mix there somewhere when the movie was being mooted!

But who knows. Actually you’re right, I don’t think Alan would have left his bass at the airport or reacted like that!

It is "loosely based upon Black Sabbath, Hawkwind and Status Quo".
I read that in an article somewhere in the 90's
It's my favourite film. Watched it last week for first time in over 20 years. I always notice something new every time.
