It is "loosely based upon Black Sabbath, Hawkwind and Status Quo". I read that in an article somewhere in the 90's It's my favourite film. Watched it last week for first time in over 20 years. I always notice something new every time. There something so life affirming about that film. When I’m I’ll in bed or whatever I have certain films I go to. Spinal tap, on her majesty’s secret service and Jason and the argonauts being the main three

Christopher Guest, aka 'Nigel Tufnel' in the fictitious band, appears to suggest it during an Q and A some years ago. Listen from about a minute onwards. Quo were in LA, playing at the Whisky a Go Go in February 1974! Could that be Nuff he's imitating towards the end of the clip? 'Fictitious'?

I always notice something new every time. I'm sure Christopher Guest mentioned Jeff Beck as a main inspiration for Nigel, or maybe that's just become a modern day legend. Also, did you know that Judas Priest has had EIGHT drummers.

If a good person dies, they go up to heaven. If a Tap fan dies, they go up to eleven.

When Quo was in Los Angeles in 1974, was there ever a story about Alan leaving his bass at the airport?

Just to add we are not the "Old" guard we are in fact the "Experienced" guard.

Just to add we are not the "Old" guard we are in fact the "Experienced" guard. Fair enough. The reason I ask is that Christopher Guest said Spinal Tap came from an English band checking into a hotel in LA in 1974, and the bass player kept saying he'd left his bass at the airport. Quo was in LA in 1974, and since there has often been mention they were the inspiration for the movie I thought this might be proof, or disproof.

I always thought that Spinal Tap was a satire on the pretentiousness of that certain type. Quo's problem with the critics was the level headed way they approached their job. They never did the finger in the ear stuff or the grandiose statement albums. I reckon Quo would be the unlikeliest band for satire, possibly at the Two Ronnies level but nothing more.

Ah. Well, I haven't been around much. No problem. I was simply pointing you to the answers on here. I'm going to merge this thread into the existing one, now you've seen it.

I believe the producers of the movie once admitted that it was based on Saxon, whom they followed around on tour for a while. Can't remember where I read that but it was probably in Classic Rock or something. And it was a while back. I know Rick always thought it was based on Quo, but I don't think it was. Although, to be fair, it could have been based on any number of daft HM acts in the 70's and 80's. A hybrid of them all It was mentioned in the Saxon Documentary 'Heavy Metal Thunder', by their ex-bassist Steve Dawson.
