Was listening to UTI and Shine On is really dull for two minutes .
And then……….it’s brilliant!! When the lead break kicks in until the end of the song it really grooves .
It’s the song equivalent of a game of two halves for me.
Everyone else seems to love the whole thing so I’m in the minority.
I don’t think I’ve ever had that with any Quo song where I’m not keen on half then love the rest !
Any thoughts ?

At the time, I thought it was the best thing Quo had recorded in many a year. Probably a couple of decades. It gets mixed reviews from Quo fans in general but if you lived through the 'wilderness years' which pretty much ran for the best part of 2 decades, with only one or two recorded exceptions, this was like a very bright light at the end of a very long tunnel. Quo hadn't recorded anything like this in eons. Place it in perspective with what had come immediately before it on Thirsty Work and Don't Stop. It's in a different league. Dark and brooding all the way through, evoking distant memories of tracks like Take Me Away and Coming And Going. Never dull at any stage for me. It simply builds nicely then breaks free and tramples over you For some, dull and predictable. For me, a genuine classic 👍

Don't love it, don't mind it. Don't know, the story the song tells is quite nice and musically, as Cammy said, the second half is rather good. But all in all it's just average for me, wouldn't put it into my player deliberately, but don't mind when it comes on in Spotify shuffle mode.

Certainly gives the impression that someone came up with a new idea and that could even have been Mike Paxman.

I only discovered this song about 10 years ago via this community. And I added it to my selection of miscellaneous Quo tracks from later years.
I'm listening to it again now. And this is what I hear.
An intense, brooding build of emotion. It's in a minor key. Rick's voice is also full of longing, yearning - the emotion that Quo made their reputation on. That builds for 1' 49" until Rick (as the character in the song) begs for the light he's looking for or reaches the light and he screams "shine on me."
And then it turns into a more conventional Quo rocking number with the chorus of "shine on, shine on" and into the musical bridge.
2 min 48" he goes back to the earlier melody, but this time, its not as slow because he's explained how he found the light and it saved him.
And then it rocks out at the end.
I don't hear a song of two halves at all; the rockier part would not stand out were it not for the build to. 4500x anyone! That has a totally different opening to where it ends up.

For me the more or less best quo song since the mighty Frantic Four, sadly the end of the song could be longer and with more lead guitar and a real ending than it would be a 10 out of 10 for me. A real relief against all the country/pop from from Mr. Rossi, a real serious rocksong, Shine On has a real backbone.

I enjoy the atmosphere Cammy of the first couple of minutes of 'Shine On' before it adopts the more usual format of Rick's more pomp orientated rock tunes of that period, the 'One Man Band' variety and of course that tune hung around in the live set for quite a time. You are right though in some respects as the band didn't have faith in 'Shine On' in terms of the live set and possibly a case of "don't bore us, get to the chorus etc etc". 'Shine On' seems to have some depth.

For two decades, I don't liked it, I skipped it since I heard the first note, but...Nowadays I don't mind it, but don't drive me nuts either.

Isn't the song about Rick having his heart issues, in '97, that lead to his Quad Heart Bypass

Isn't the song about Rick having his heart issues, in '97, that lead to his Quad Heart Bypass I believe so. An operation that gave him pretty much another 20 years. Worth singing about

His comeback gig - his first comeback gig - was at Norwich City's Carrow Road if I remember correctly. Which I may not. Someone will no doubt keep me right. Supported by one Shakin' Stevens. Some things never change
